OK, so tivo just released this service option , which seems pretty cool... the only thing is that we have had some of this with our replays for awhile.

Do you guys think that this may help in the fight of keeping the show sharing (at least locally) available to us and make the fight harder?

I thought it was pretty cool to see. What do you guys think?

No, I don't think it'd help.

I read somewhere in the multitude of announcements that the broadcasters can set some flag to prevent the TiVo from doing room-to-room show sharing, and there's no possibility at all of IVS.

In other words, TiVo's going out of their way to give the studios the last word in everything.

I haven't seen any mention of Tivo and a "don't share" flag... Tivo is limiting it to only in-house sharing, though... no sharing with friends and relatives with Tivos, like Replayers can.

Read the fine print of the page linked above:

*You can turn Multi-Room Viewing off on any DVR. You decide which DVRs can share programming. Television programming is not under TiVo's control. Programming providers may restrict or limit the transfer of particular programs. TiVo does not guarantee access to or transfer of any particular program

Thanks, didn't see that before... I'm wondering if they just look for things Replays look for and block, like PPV.

I do not see the logic of disableing of sharing shows between rooms. Why would a broadcaster want to limit shows in one home? More BS from the entertainment industry.

I guess if I hadn't followed Randy712's lead and gotten a channel modulator the show-sending stuff would be more attractive to me... but as of now, there's nothing really "must-have" in the Home Media package to make me want it, even if my Series1 Tivos could get it.

From the "Wireless Connections" page
http://www.tivo.com/4.9.9.2.asp

"You can connect your DVRs with a wireless USB adapter, or with an Ethernet (wired) USB adapter. Using an Ethernet (wired) USB adapter for one DVR allows faster transfers of recordings between DVRs."

They refer to "faster transfer" of shows from one unit to another. Does this means that it doesn't stream the show unit-to-unit in real-time like Replay, even when you've got a wired connection?

It doesn't stream like the Replay. It receives a show and buffers it locally. It will let you start watching it right away but, this way, if you have a slow network, you can wait for it to buffer a bit before watching.

...I think that there is some confusion between TiVo's

"we don't control broadcaster's decisions" announcement

and the concept being kicked around to legislate something

called "the broadcast flag."

There is nothing intrinsic in the TiVo Home Media Option

to prevent show sharing between rooms - that clause

you quoted ("we don't control broadcaster's decisions")

is there to allow TiVo wiggle-room if the broadcast flag

gets implemented.

In short, the broadcast flag is a mythical bit on a digital

broadcast that will command the pathway that digital

signal can take through the user's home stereo system.

If the flag is on, the signal can move unhampered through

DVD recorders, receivers, DVRs, and - of course - TiVo's

room sharing. If the broadcast flag is off, however, the

only device that can receive the digital signal is a digital

TV. (No recording, no show sharing, no room sharing.)

BTW, you *should* be alarmed about this proposal - especially

if you have purchased a digital TV. The inclusion of a device

specific broadcast bit *could* render all existing digital

TVs useless. (This only sounds alarmist, because nothing

is definite yet.)

What this might do is set a benchmark for in-home sharing. As I understand it, TiVo heavily encrypts their streams and uses signed certificates to make sure that video is only shared between TiVo receivers on one account. They also make sure that both boxes in a transaction are on one TiVo account, and are on a single IP subnet. In settlement talks, Content Companies may say "you can do what TiVo does" for sharing, which would make DVarchive unusable. Unfortunately, if they feel that they have RePlayTv over a sufficiently large barrel, they may only settle for having it completely removed.
