Now I give all the credit in the world to the guys that design and build their theaters. My issue is that once you start paying people to build it for you, doesnt it sort of lose its value as an "award" piece? If I had all the money in the world I could get "HTOM" built all the time. I dont think much praise should be given to someone who just pays someone to build something. My entire theater was built by hand, by me, and only me. I understand that you need electricians and plumbers etc. to get to code but after that, shouldnt the owner do all the work to get the praise? Maybe im just old school and can never feel satisfied with a job well done unless ive done all of it. And I am not saying or pointing fingers to any of the winners of the HTOM but is there a standard that has to be meet to get the nod?

While a lot of forums on AVS are DIY, there is a lot of focus on the professional media installers. No doubt that the amount of money spent to have a pro do a theater is a different ball game from what many a DIYer has done and having a process where DIY projects are submitted and judged could be very onerous. I've seen other forums where competitions became down right vicious and were cancelled due to opinions on what is in the spirit of the rules and what is not. Having said that, i believe that posting your project to give others inspiration is the best route. Which project deserves a nod of best that month would. in my opinion, open a can of worms that the mods don't need. As an example, would a DIY project with a DIY screen and DIY speakers be more deserving than off the shelf products? It can get very heated, very fast.

Agree! Why isn't the receiver DIY and the couch too?
Where to draw the line? I like buying my furniture don't think I could make it...

Actually, I can and have made furniture, but I got to draw tHe line at butchering the cattle.
Having a nice screen while using a candle as a light source isn't what one would call a quality product.

" In an effort to find the best home theaters to feature in AVS Forum's Home Theater of the Month, I call upon you, our members, to submit your theater—or someone else's you know to be cool—for consideration. I'm looking a combination of performance and style, not only in super-high-end, cost-no-object rooms, but also in builds of more modest means. The important thing is great performance in an appealing, dedicated space."

The above is a quote from scott wilkinson's post http://www.avsforum.com/t/1496376/call-for-ht-of-the-month-candidates

So HT of the month is not a competition where someone wins and someone does not, nor is it about DIY or custom built by a builder. with the main intention of crediting the theater owner but Its about showcasing all the best and cool theaters on AVS for other members eye candy or inspiration. Anyone can submit their dedicated theater as long as they don't have a problem publicizing it for the forum and Sott is just posting each theater in the order of request that he received. If it was for grand theaters then last month's DIY theater which was small http://www.avsforum.com/t/1505451/ht-of-the-month-theater-for-hobbits would not have published.

I am also assuming HT of the month is not meant for a room with few treatments and a tv in it , because it will not make sense. Maybe there should be a separate thread for that like Media Room of the Month. to

I see how the title and theaters can not only be eyecandy and inspire creativity but can also inspire jealousy and criticism. Human nature

I used to always make this claim at car shows when I was a kid. who cares if their car is way nicer than mine, I BUILT my car, and they bought theirs...

there's definitely merit to it, but I don't think one is better or worse. some ppl will praise result, others value the build. I personally would be more PROUD of something I built myself, but I'm pretty sure paying a pro would get me better PERFORMANCE.

anyway, I certainly enjoy the HTOM's I've seen so far. but when they mention the price they paid, and especially when it's stated like it's a small amount, I often wonder where all that money went...

I hear you to an extent. I built my own speakers, but I'm not sure if I'm capable of building everything for my theater. For me, I'm having someone help me. I'm doing the work with him because I don't have the skill or know how to do it all myself. I'll be putting together all the electronics etc, but together we'll be doing the sheetrock and woodworking etc. I'm not hiring someone to do it all for me and I'll be seeking advice form the people on these boards, but it's not strictly DIY.

Perhaps a DIY HTOM and HTOM. Perhaps a WAF of the month too.

I could not agree more from someone else that used to show cars. I used to sleep, eat, work all the time on my vehicles. It's so rewarding knowing 99% was done my my wife and I. I remember the trailer queens that never saw the road let along daily driven.

I understand not everyone will do everything to their HT's. But anyone can spend money and get anything built the way they want. Yes, I love looking at all the theaters here but maybe they can say how much was DIY to paid.

Hopefully in the next year I'm starting on my HT dedicated. I have been reading, bookmarking, etc. This way I will have as much info to work through it. The greatest thing we have today is the internet and these forums to help. Back in the day it was trial and error or help from fellow enthusiasts.

Btw. Everyone keep up the great work, will inspire someone.
