I have the Polk Signature Series speakers and am wanting to build out a 4K home theater setup.

My current set of speakers powered by my receiver are:
  • 2 x Polk S60 (single-amped; receiver only supports bi-amping in 5ch)
  • 1 x Polk S30
  • 4 x Polk S20

My current receiver is a 7.2ch Yamaha from 2006 and works just fine with what I've got. Sadly, it's only got 2 x HDMI 1.3 input ports so it doesn't even have ARC. I'd also like 11.2ch or 7.2.4ch Dolby Atmos.

I looked at combining the Yamaha CX and MX receiver and amp, but they're $5K as a pair. After seeing that, I'm wondering if a cheaper receiver would be able to drive these speakers and provide an adequate listening experience for a much lower cost.

I believe these speakers don't take much to drive, and I'm hardly maxing them as it is. I usually have my AV system set between -5dB and 0dB for movies, but I also have the mains near the bottom-end of the per-speaker tuning as they're too loud otherwise.

Is there a receiver under a grand I could pickup to do 11.2ch or 7.2.4ch with these speakers?

Side question: is 11.2ch or 7.2.4ch the correct way of denoting the speaker arrangement?

11.2 would denote 11 speakers on the horizontal with two subwoofers. 7.2.4 would denote 7 speakers on the horizontal, 4 speakers on the vertical (Atmos/height speakers) and two subwoofers.

You aren't going to find 11 channels of amplification under $1000. Onkyo RZ 840 has 9 channels of amplification MSRP $999.99. Denon 4500 has 9 channels of amplification MSRP $1599.99. The 4500 can be found open box for about 30% off MSRP. Both support 11 channels with an additional amp.

You could try finding a used 3 channel amp to pair with either. I say 3 channels became it makes more sense to allow the amp to run the LEFT CENTER RIGHT. Emotiva makes some relatively inexpensive 3 channel amplifiers, as does Monoprice with the Monolith series, but even used you are looking at around $750 for older model amps from both companies.

Some people have used Crown amplifiers in their home systems even though that is not the intended use. The Crown XLi 800 is a 2 channel 200 watts @ 8 ohms per channel amp with MSRP of just $269.99. Check out Amazon and Sweetwater for customer reviews. That would be your least expensive option paired with an AVR.

I see. So most 9.2 systems support 11ch, just that I'd have to add an amp.

Do they normally give you controls for how to dedicate power to different inputs? Like you suggested, if I bought a separate amp, I'd have to tell it "I'm pre-outing my 3 front channels". My current one doesn't have that option.

I have a cheap $40 Pyle 2ch amp if I need something. Probably won't sound as good, but for height speakers, shouldn't be a big deal if it comes down to it.

At this point, I might consider going up in price. Where's the starting point for 11ch out of a single receiver? Is that a good option or is it best to just buy a 7ch or 9ch receiver with pre-outs for 4ch heights?

PM me if you cannot access the link. This same question was asked in April 2019.

I own the Denon 6500. 11 channels of amplification. MSRP $2199.99 . It can be found as open box for about 25% off MSRP. I found that to be cheaper than a 9.2 channel AVR using external amplification.
