Home theater riser subwoofer

2076 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  N173MM
This is my converted garage that I use as a home theater (and some storage) and am doing a major upgrade to most components. My current question is the soon to be built, rear sofa riser. I have enough room for it to contain two Eminence 21" drivers and tuned to 19hz. The distance from the front wall (the bathtub looking thig is supposed to be a TV) is pretty fixed. Can I get some comments/feedback/ideas on this setup and placement? I have two more of these drivers coming that I can use to fill in any nulls. Thanks.

I have a buddy here in Houston that built his riser with 4x Ultimax 18-22’s in it. His room was 11’x18’ or there abouts. The room was constructed so well, along with his front sound stage of the massive amount of additional subs, the room was pressurized very easily. The units built in the riser felt like VNF, like what I have installed.
For you essentially, with such massive subs, and depending on how much power you’ll be feeding them, and looking at your room, I would opt NOT to install them into the riser, and build dedicated enclosures that allow you to move them around in your massive room , to find the right spot. Whether using the sub crawl, or using a UMIK-1 and REW to tune your room.
i think you would be putting un-do constraints on yourself my limiting the placement of the 21’s as VNF in a large room, not allowing for proper room placement being locked in to your riser.
even having additional units to try to account for nulls, my $0.02 is that you’d be better served by allowing yourself the flexibility of placing any of them anywhere in room, and then dedicate smaller units as VNF subs in the future if that’s something you desire.
move attached a couple of photos of the build that had the 4-18”’s in it, but I’d forego this if I were you.

I don't mean to highjack this thread but it seems a decent place to ask. Anyone got a recommendations as to where to start reading/learning about infinite baffle subs built into risers the ones discussed here?

Edit: I thought you meant open baffle as that gets the most air time - they are silent but deadly. For that, it starts in this thread but there are many others about the BOSS:

Infinite Baffle is a different idea altogether that does produce audible sound, and lots of it. I cannot recall where those have been discussed but I know a few have placed infinite baffle subs in their ceilings with opposed drivers to the side and opening down to the room.

I was building a riser anyway so I went ahead and built it as an enclosure and tuned it to 20hz. The only thing that I did differently is that I ended up only using one of the Eminence NSW 6021-6 drivers. The second one is going into an ottoman I'm building. It will be directly in front of the riser, behind the front row. Sorry for the terrible pics, I will post better, more detailed images when the ottoman is done. I have to smooth imperfections, route edges, and carpet everything at the end. I ended up adding a 3/4" mounting spacer to I couldn't inadvertently scoot the middle/center couch leg into the woofer. The riser was built out of 3/4" birch plywood from Home Depot. The port is 6.4" x 10.5" x 21". The actual enclosure portion is 45" x 12" x 61".
