Hey guys,

I'm currently in the market for a new 5.1/7.1 home theater setup. I have narrowed down the receiver to an Onkyo TX-SR806 however I'm not sure of what speakers to go along with it.

I currently have a set of Paradigm 5se MkII which I would like to keep, yes I'm nostalgic but the sound quality is great for such an old timer. I also have a Sony A/V and SW but I'm not going to keep those.

I will be setting up the system with an LG 42" 1080p, PS3, Wii, XBOX360 (Non HDMI) and latest DirecTV receiver (HD/DVR combo).

The room is roughly 15'x20' (see included picture below for a setup estimate).

I have been looking at the Polk Audio RM95 Home Theater Speaker System paired with the Polk Audio PSW10 SW however I'm not sure about either one of these.

My thought is that the paradigms have enough boost to feed the L+R channels then use the remaining to create the surround setting.

Can I have some feedback regarding my options?

My budget is roughly $500, however I can stretch it a little bit for a better quality product.

Thanks! e-beer

It comes down to how much you like a mismatched front soundstage as the little Polk center won't keep up with the Paradigm's if you used them as mains and I would also bet the timbre match would be non existent and be very annoying as sounds pan Left and right.

The little Polks only go down to 130hz, which means you will have directional bass from the subwoofer, so keeping the subwoofer located near the front mains and center where most of the action happens would be the best placement for a set up like you are suggesting.

I think the better idea would be to try to find some surrounds that would be a close match sonically to your present Paradigms for a 4.0 system right away, would give you much better performance and feeling in a movie, second choice would be to buy a better subwoofer for HT impact then move on to the surrounds, I mention it this way as you say you are happy with the bass from the Paradigms other wise I would suggest subwoofer first as it offers the most impact from an HT perspective, but if you don't watch much action movies then the surrounds would offer more involvment in a movie. Either way I would avoid mixing in your Paradigms with the Polks you are looking at.

IMO, you're planning to get way more receiver than you need for those systems you're looking at. Better to get something like the Onkyo 606 and take the money you save and put it towards a better speaker system.

In any case, you might want to look at an EMP package that is on sale:

Looking at your advice I toned down the A/V receiver and at least upped the speakers for a bit more $$$.

I chose the following:

1) Onkyo TX-SR706

2) Klipsch Reference Series RB-51 Bookshelf speakers x2

3) Klipsch Reference Series RC-52 Center channel speaker

4) Klipsch Reference Series RS-10 Surround speakers x2

I'm also planning on rearranging the living room to be more HT oriented and balanced.
