Home Theatre setup (with a dvd recorder)

I have a home theatre setup and I'm not sure if the way I have everything is optimal (especially in light of having a DVD recorder). From my cable box I have my component out going to my HDTV and the coax out going to the DVD player. So I have a few questions:

1) Should I be able to record in 5.1 to the DVD player?

2) With my current setup is there anyway to record something from TV that I'm NOT watching (I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but I'm just checking). If no, how could I set this up so I could record something I'm not watching.

3) Should I be using the composite cables from the cable box to the DVD recorder?

Thanks,

Frank

1. There are no players that will record 5.1. I believe this is because of copyright laws.

2. Unlike using the Tivo, you do not have but one input, and cannot record more than one show at a time.

3. I have my Pioneer 220 connected to my STB via S-video. S-video should give you a better picture, but you may not see that much of a difference.
