Tonight my HOA is meeting to discuss possibly allowing Satellite dish TV as an alternative to the Cable TV we currently have. I know about the FCC rules regarding HOA's not being able to forbid you from installing a Small Satellite Dish or outdoor antenna, but it doesn't apply to us since in our condos all the outdoor walls and roof are "common areas", which are excluded from the FCC ruling. Besides, as a homeowner I don't want to see multiple ugly little dishes & outdoor antennas installed & visible from the street. I currently get Charter HDTV cable (with occassional 5.1 audio dropouts) and OTA through an indoor antenna (with occassional reception problems on KABC).

What are our options as far as installing a central dish (or array of dishes) and OTA UHF/VHF antenna on the roof of our condos. We have a 4 separate 3 floor structures, with 24 total condos in Pasadena, CA. We're 7 miles away from all the Los Angeles TV/HDTV transmission towers on Mt. Wilson, with a clear line of sight to them from the roof. We currently have a central box in the shared underground garage were all Cable TV is distributed. Is it possible to re-use the wiring that's already there (standard 75 OHM Cable, non-RG6 wiring) for an OTA antenna and/or DirecTV or DISH satellite usage? Basically, run one cable with the combined Satellite and OTA antenna signal to this central Cable TV box and distribute it from there, through some sort of patch-panel.

Aside from the programming and receiver differences, does the DirecTV or DISH service favor this type of signal distribution more than the other?

You need to get in touch with a local Dish / Direct dealer / installer AFTER you have given them time to work up a suitable proposal. There exists MDU systems, but they are not exactly run of the mill.
