Horrible aliasing artifacts throughout "Dirty Dancing"

3525 Views 49 Replies 25 Participants Last post by  kriktsemaj99
I just finished watching the recent BD release of "Dirty Dancing" and I'm sorry to report that this transfer shows the most horrible aliasing artifacts I have ever seen on any next generation release (including early Warner "bobbed 1080i" mess).

I really don't know what went so awfully wrong here. It is "unwatchable" on my 10 feet wide screen.

Anybody else care to share his experiences?

Thank you. I read the review and was pleasantly surprised that they actually mention it.

But I think people are still not aware of the extend of it being a "broken" and incomprehensible transfer and not mere artifacting.

Can you compare it to the upconverted DVD (we all know you own both
)

How is the audio?

Audio is decent. 7.1 is just for marketing purposes.

Don't get me wrong - the transfer is sharp and detailed for the most part - no comparison to the (horrible) DVD release - but the aliasing here is not a mere artifact but the result of a severe defect in the transfer process.
Well, it is a fairly washed out looking 1980's film...

I would not be expecting Tier 0 with this title...this was not a movie that 'wowed' audiences with is vibrant colors or special effects.

I rented this title on BluRay just out of curousity (have not seen many 80's movies on BD) and thought it looked real good considering the age and quality of the orginal film (which I tought was about a mute in terms of colors as it gets). Detail was spot on and its pretty amazing what the hidef formats can do for older films such as this. Aliasing and artifacts were not bothersome on my 1080p SXRD via a PS3

Is it Crank or Casino Royale...no...but its pretty damn good video quality considering the movie.
I never thought my first post here would be about Dirty Dancing...

Anyway, I have to agree with TheLion. The aliasing here is not mere artifact, something just went plain wrong at Panasonic (the authoring facility for this title). Maybe one of our Insiders (paidgeek?) could shed light on this. Overall I found video & audio on this title to be above expectations, EXCEPT for the horrible aliasing which was even noticed by my wife, who is usually not very perceptive in these matters.

It's a pity because overall I thought this was a very strong release by Lionsgate.

Age has nothing to do with it. Look at Blazing Saddles (1970's) or The Searchers. They look amazing and are older. It has to do with the transfer and not the age.

I have not seen the Bd of Dirty dancing, but it sounds like they used an old made for dvd master and tried to spiff it up for BD.

Sucks

Since color fidelity, sharpness, and detail are, as previously mentioned, above expectations, I don't think this specific problem lies in a sub-par master.

The aliasing is so pronounced and "clean" along silhouettes of people & faces (almost as if you had marked them in photoshop) that it would be interesting to hear a compressionist's opinion of what went wrong here. I haven't seen this to this extent before.
All that being said, I still think this a a decent set. If you have a display that somewhat masks the aliasing or you can avoid looking for it, you could do worse than picking this up (in terms of tech specs - of course you still need a significant other who wants you to buy it in the first place).
Dirty Dancing for me marks the second catalog title that sucks with Big Fish being my first Blu Ray catalog title. HD DVD has a few older titles that didn't turn out well but Dirty Dancing looks worse than x-mas vacation and thats the worst HD DVD Title I own. HD DVD more often than not still has the edge in PQ , my 2 cents.

Well, The Searchers received a serious restoration for the BD and new DVD release, beyond a new transfer. That's definitely a factor with older titles.
Did anyone compare the Blu-ray transfer to the one that was shown last weekend on Showtime HD?

Sounds like a job for XYLON!
I thought Big Fish was considered decent transferwise...?

Tier 3- Good

Few 3D effects, some digital noise/artifacting

Not tier 4 at least

I have seen other people complaining about it. I have already seen the dvd and no interest in re-visiting.

Dirty Dancing is unwatchable for me, period.
