Horrid tearing with VMR9

2176 Views 38 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  mattpwill
I use VMR9 in Zoom Player, and no matter what decoders I use I get tearing. I can't enable VSync in Reclock, but I'm sure nobody can. Is there a way of applying Vsync with VMR9?

My rig basics:

6600GT

EMU0404

Please help

Thanks

Matt

right now it seems the only real way to get rid of VMR9 tearing is in renderless mode, which is in testing stages with ZP. Right now MCE 2005, Mediator, and TT2.1 all support VMR9 renderless mode (note there is a difference between renderless and windowless, which windowless can be found in ZP but not renderless).

I use Windows. What's a recommended alternative to Zoom Player that supports renderless?

I need to use:

Dscaler video decoder

PowerDVD audio decoder

Reclock

No FFDShow, because it makes little difference when added with my eyes to Dscaler (which is excellent!)

Also, if possible I'd like to be able to use the nvidia dvd decoder too, as an alternative to Dscaler

Thanks

again, Mediator or TT2.1 (If you dont already have the Nvidia codecs TT comes with the latest Nvidia codecs)

-Josh
What's the "official" website for Mediator?

Thanks
Don't think there is one, it was developed by a fellow AVSer.

but can be found here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=471346

At least with me, on the ZP alpha and reclock when you use renderless reclock errors out as being incompatible with the video card. move to windowless and its fine. In retrospect I found that tears went away as long as I made sure that the video was on the primary display. Even if you are cloneing one of the displays is the primary display make sure that you are trying to view video off of the right one.
Is Direct3D fullscreen the renderless mode in Mediator?

Thanks

Thanks
correct. VMR9 uses Direct3D to render its video image, and the Direct3D fullscreen is the renderless mode of VMR9.

I just tried it, and well.. it's amazing!

The future is HTPC :D

Wow, the only problem is I get no controls at all. Maybe I should look towards TT

How long will it be until Zoom Player supports renderless?

I've got a new 6600GT card, but I can't get it so close to 72Hz using Powerstrip as I could with my old Radeon 9100. Is there a way of achieving this?

As you can tell, I'm very pleased with the result!!

Thanks

well in renderless mode you can not use the right click method for controls, you have to use short cut keys.

Renderless mode is just like a video game, you dont have the option of using right click menues in video games so you can't get that feature in renderless mode as well.

I too just went to TT2.1 becuase it has renderless mode working and I am in love :) I am not sure when ZP will fully support renderless mode, I guess Blight would know that answer.

As I dont have a 6600 I really can't help u there on achiving 72hz but I think I read something about the 6600's having issues with decent NTSC timings.

Glad your liking the results with mediator, you can also test out TT2.1 for 7 days, you have to use a CC or whatever to pay to download it but they dont charge your CC until you activate it, you have 7 days to try it out before having to activate it so that may be another route there, also if you don't already have the nvidia codecs, TT comes with the latest codecs, and I highly recomend getting the nvida codecs, they are a nice addition to the VMR9 renderless setup.

I've just discovered for myself that you can specify advanced timings in the nvidia driver control panel. Is it as good as Powerstrip?
No. At least, I've always had difficulty getting the Advanced Timings panel to work at all! The driver would never accept anything I enter there - it forgets them as soon as I hit Apply or Ok!

Powerstrip is still the best.
Media Portal also supports renderless mode. It was one of the first.
Maxleung: thats weird because me and many sony GW owners are using the advanced timings within the nvidia driver set just fine.

Just to clarify, Renderless does not necessarily mean Full screen exclusive. You can run VMR9 Renderless without running in exclusive mode (SageTV does this right now). It is the Exclusive Fullscreen mode that is the cure to tearing, it just happens that Exclusive FS requires renderless mode.
How can I get precisely 72Hz? I've tried setting different values but I don't know what I'm doing! Please help. The closest I'm getting is 72.09Hz

Thanks

Matt
Try enabing v-sync in the nvidia 3D control panel & see if that helps.
Can anyone here get exactly 72Hz registering in Reclock on their system with tweaking?
Im still trying to determine if I get tearing. Reclock really does not explain much. I mean I use the tear test, the bar line does not break anywhere, but it is whobbly, I tried with overlay and the line looked exactly the same so I assume I am getting no tearing, or I could probably tell.

But I am simply using a [email protected], ati 9800 non pro, and I see people with 6800 amd 3400 complaining about tearing.

Also V-sync in your videocard should definately be enabled.
