So I was looking at starting to play around with some house automation stuff (wall switches, outlets, motion sensors) but there seem to be quite a few different formats out there (x-10, control4, other wireless control technologies)...

X-10 seems relatively cheap, but am I am digging a hole for myself? Is this a dying technology? Should I be looking at something else that has more of a future?

I want to start off with a few inexpensive controllable devices, and grow from there. I like the x10 usb controller which will operate when the PC is off, which is nice, but not necessary.

I have several server computers (running 24/7) at home which could do the job of controlling the 'smart home'.

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Can you recommend some systems?
