No, I don't expect to be able to stream local content with a newer TV, but I'm wondering if the apps for things like Netflix and Amazon are any good at this point. I currently have a Sony 40HX800, and the apps on that are pretty poor, but that TV is a couple years old at this point. I'm currently close to picking up a 55" passive 3D Smart TV. Have they gotten any better at making apps for the supposedly "Smart" TVs? Right now I primarily use my Xbox or my PS3 for Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon VOD.

Well, I don't necessarily mean are they BETTER, but are they more usable than they were.
It would be appealing for my wife if she didn't have to switch sources to use Netflix and such, if they were built into the TV and usable she would use them more.

They slowly improve with each generation of smart tv (in which case you want newest 2013 sets), unless your super picky about these things the built in apps would likely be good enough for most people.

on this note, why doesn't hdmi have the ability to have a device say "switch to me". Therefore, instead of having to take out the TV remote (or if luckier a universal) and figure out which input on tv to use, one could simply press a "tv" button on the device's remote (or the universal remote when in that device's mode) to instruct the tv to switch to it.

Yeah, we even have a Harmony that's fully set up, but even with the ease of that, she's reluctant to switch very often. It'd be easier for her if it was right there. Hell, maybe I'll just set up the remote for the new TV I'm about to get for her use.
