How big a file fits on a DVD-R?

511 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  bobkart
I recorded a movie put it on a dvd-r then copied to my hd using Tsunami. I then mad a menu and tried to write to dvd-r but now it says file too large to fit. Question is, what size do the total files have to be to fit? Is there an easy way to determine this?

I don't have Tsunami (I'm a Mac user) but the maximum amount that fits a DVD-R disc is 4.38 GB. Some authoring applications won't work with MPEG files exceeding a total of 4 GB because they reserve the remaining space for the menus created by the authoring application. There should be some explanation of this in the software's manual or help.

One option may be for you to save your Tsunami-authored project as a DVD image file or VIDEO_TS folder and then use an application such as DVD Shrink to fit it to a DVD-R. Maybe Tsunami has this shrink capability built in.
Thanks, that helped a lot. Next time I will try that. I did get it to work by editing the movie more and slimmimg down on the menus.

No, not the Tsunami DVD Authoring (TDA) software. But the Tsunami MPEG Encoder (TMPGEnc) can re-encode the video from an authored DVD to any bitrate within the DVD Standard, then TDA will let you make another DVD file structure (VIDEO_TS) out of that. And it doesn't care about any particular size limits like 4GB, I've made them nearly 8GB for Dual-Layer discs.

EDIT: FYI, 4,700,000,000 bytes = 4.377216GB, just a bit (less than 3MB) under 4.38GB.
My E100 says it can put 4409MB (which I think would be 4.409GB) on a DVD-R. DVD-RAM holds a bit less at 4343MB. Looks like different brands set different maximum size limits?

The limit I'm talking about is how much data can fit on a DVD regardless of the recorder.

4409MB ~= 4.31GB by the way. Well under the 4.377GB "hard limit".
