check out doom9.org for more info.

Basic compressing I would use DVDFab decryptor to rip the movie.

Then use Clone DVD or DVD Shrink to compress

then burn using IMG Burn

Or if you really want to go high quality rip with above mentioned program

then use DVD rebuilder combined with CCE to get a high quality encode (however can take all night to encode )

That will not work. You must use www.doom9.org or doom9.net .

I wasn't sure if the site would filter the address like some others I've seen or not so I left off the www to negate the hyperlink.
2 programs I use are 1 Click DVD copy and Nero Recode
You can also buy double layer DVDR pretty cheap now - no need for compression.

quality DL media is still nearly 2.00 per disc as compared to .25 or less for single layer...so I wouldn't say that's cheap in comparison.
Yes, $2 if you buy at regular price. Where I live they go on sale every few weeks for about buck 20 CAD. I am not a high volume burner so it is well worth it over SL IMO.
Many player don't play DL burnt media as well, especially older models, say 3-4 years old ones.

check out this site for your model compatibility, just enter your model in the top window.

40 bucks will get you the Chinese program "FabDVD".

look into it - seriously braindead easy and WORKS!

been using it for almost two years now. it "spans" sinlge layer discs too - (breaks up big file from DL and lets you put on sinlge layer discs).
I really disagree with the above post. "Braindead" is NOT the way to go. If you are going to do this it is worthwhile to spend the little bit of time required to understand the process and technology. You will do a much better and satisfying job. In addition, all of the best tools needed, and regular updates, are all FREE. If you need any help just find a bright 14 year old - they all know and understand the process.

Tiger Direct offers 25 Memorex 2.4x DL discs for 29.00 ($1.16 per disc before S&H), so I would imagine they can be found elsewhere at comparable prices. However, not all DVD burners can burn DL. Make sure your's can before you invest in the media.

Remember he said "Quality" media. Memorex is far from Quality on their D/L discs. The only quality D/L media I have found is Verbatim. And Verbatim media is about $2 per disc.
I've tried quite a few options and I would recommend:

purchase anydvd $40 to run in the background removing PUO's and encryption (they update often to remove the latest and greatest)

use dvd shrink with "burn with imgburn" option, you'll have to google the dvdshrink/imgburn combo program (dvd shrink and imgburn are free)

You can do this all for free of course but you'll have to do much more user interaction, whereas this method is only a few clicks in dvd shrink

I would also recommend only using Verbatim dvd+r's, the quality in other brands can vary considerably. Also some players don't care for certain brands but i've never had a problem with Verbatim.

like is too complex already. many 14 yr olds have alot of spare time. the rest of us work for a living and have "stuff" to get done and don't want to spend hours and days learning how to edit a video file. Briandead is the best way to go.

There are more things than video - even on a PC. one can spend yrs learng how to use Virtual Dub and editing DVDs or more hours learning how to add subitles to the AVI-Divx files you labored over to get to encode. or spend days learing how to use some Sound editing application or some Photoshop or GIMP frontend for graphics. or wresting with some unuser friendly app like so many usenet binery prgrams just to get on the usenet and get a simple file or two.

there are only so many hours in a day and so many days in a year.

I for one like programs that do not require a PHD to use (bragging rights go to those with a crapload of free time) and just "work".

I've been using computers for 15 yrs now and used to load up all the latest and greatest crap every month or so. Well - it took me years but I finally figured out that of the 50 or so apps I had installed I used maybe 5 of them.

Now I have far far fewer apps on my PC - and I've learned to cut the fat. Apps like Nero (ones that used to do ONE thing and ONE thing well............got malignant, bloated and too complex to justifiy their continued existence.

I dropped Nero for a simple freeware CDburner program. It does what Nero 4.0 did.

oh ya - I use Winamp 2.78!!! and freeware "media player classic" for simple vids.

oh ya - as mentioned above - media brands (not brand but really die manufacterer) do matter.

the problem is the brands now outsource the die - so the brand no longer means anything - you have to find out where the DVD was actually made! and this is not usually findable information.

stay away from Princo (and COMPUSA - really Princo) - their die is unstable and fade - FAST. You video will be gone in 6-months. I bought 100 of them 3 yrs ago, got rid of them for 5-bucks to a guy who was using them for temporay storage use.

I like Matix brand and cheap - but again brand means nothing now - so the best thing to do is buy a sample and set them on your car's dashboard face up inthe sun for a month - pull it out and try playing it on your DVD twice a week. Summertime is opitmal time with the sun and heat!

I did this and after a couple of months figured out which DVDs were stable and which ones were crap.

Opitdisc was CRAP - video become unplayabe after TWO DAYS in the sun!! disc was diss-colored too!

generic-14centers lasted 2-weeks (good enough I figured since the overall winner was the Matrix brand at one month).

TDK only lasted one week.

none lasted more than a month - so I expect the real world lifetime from the best discs is probably 10 yrs maybe?

I've had 2-3 percent of my CDrs go bad since the late-90s. Lost some good stuff too ;-(. I make 2-copies of everything now.................matter if data integrity

I had ALOT of compatablility problems with DVD players.

Save your self alot of heartache - go buy the cheapest brand DVD player there is (Durabrand -20 bucks)..................the new cheap players will play ANYTHING!!

After I did that - I bought 400 no-name DVDs for 14-cents each and never looked back.

I use DVDshrink... freeware, don't know if it's still available though. It does the ripping and compressing in one step. Then you end up with an .ISO image file, and I use Nero to burn it to DVD-R. It has alot of features/settings adjustments, but isn't too complicated.
Too bad it won't work with many Disney, Sony, and Lionsgate titles, since it hasn't been updated for years.
Again, I highly recommend DVDFab Platinum. well worth the few bucks to buy it. It has all the features of DVD Shrink and much much more (and a better GUI) as well as having the advantages of being constantly updated with the newest ripping techniques to get buy the crap sony and co call "copy protection"
DVD Fab Decrypter will rip any movie (even the latest ones). I believe this is newest version

DVD Shrink will re-author your movie so you can remove extraneous stuff like warnings (LOL), trailers, extra languages and features, sometimes even another copy of the movie itself embedded within the original disc. That way you have less compression when you save the movie

Finally, get your serving decent burning software. i used Nero
