How can I tell that the screen that was shipped to me is in fact a High Power?

154 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Blake Brubaker - Da-Lite
Well, after a few days of watching DVDs and TV (interlaced NTSC) on my new 102" DaLite Model B High Power, I have to admit that I'm not impressed.

I honestly can't see much of a difference in picture quality compared to watching something on my wall. Yes, it's a little clearer .. and the setup looks cooler (always an important factor) .. but it's not night/day. Perhaps, my wall had a high gain to begin with and hence the difference isn't as apparent? Or maybe I simply don't have "golden eyes."

However, I'm also curious as to whether or not DaLite might have shipped me the wrong screen. I doubt it. My invoice and packing slip all say High Power or "HP". But, is there anyway to tell from the screen itself?

Thanks.

An easy way is to check the viewing angle.

If your projector is floor or coffee table mounted, you should see noticeable a brightness increase while seated rather than standing. If your projector is ceiling mounted, it should appear brighter when you're standing.

You could also do a side-to-side test. Moving 6' or so to either side should reduce brightness to about what you would get on a white painted wall.

You can also try raising your screen to half the height. When in your viewing position, does the screen half appear brighter than the wall half?

On the end cap of the roller (left side), there should be a small access panel removable by two small screws. Remove this small panel and on the inside of the panel will be a white sticker. This will contain Date of Manufacture, Screen Type, Model # and the Serial #.

Don,

Please do not remove the end cap as Darren has suggested..... First of all what Darren is suggesting only works for electric screens. Manual screens have tension placed on the roller so that it will retract. Therefore, please do not remove the end cap. We have placed safety screws on the left end so it is in fact very difficult to remove that end cap.

As far as determining if you got the right screen, do as Tom has suggested and see what happens to the image when you are either above or below your projector and then right next to the lens. Also, take a look at the surface, if it appears to have a somewhat smooth film over the screen it is in all likely hood HP.

Although not impossible, it is very unlikely that we would have sent you a MW instead of a HP. When side by side, the two fabrics are very different.

Thanks,

Blake
