I bought my first VCR in 1985 and have since collected a few thousand movies in various formats. Also spent several years doing photography and light weight videography.

The quality of the video tapes has deteriorated badly but they still play. I find that my recorded DVDs frequently do not work after about five years.

I would like to transfer my collection to massive (3TB) external hard drives. Perhaps that will preserve them?

Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Perhaps I posted in the wrong forum. I did not find the ideal forum upon first perusal. I chose the blu-ray forum because that is mostly what I use these days. Also had the most viewers at the moment.

I primarily use a LG BP620C blu-ray player and a newish 47" 3D led TV by LG. I went led for the energy savings as I plan to be off the grid in the near future.

The LG BP620C blu-ray player does have a USB port. However it will not play AVI files.
