As a general rule, is there one preferable to another? Any particular characteristics of each?

Thanks

I take the pragmatic approach on this one:

There are many front-firing subs that respected reviewers say sound great.

There are many down-firing subs that respected reviewers say sound great.

Therefore, the effect, if any, must not be significant to my sub buying decision. ;)

You can load a down-firing driver closer to a tri-corner space if you're so inclined.

Forward-firing drivers usually end up at least 2' from one wall when placed in a corner.

Downward drivers have to be specifically designed for this orientation, to prevent dynamic offset from occurring.

ie: the cone is naturally biased downward by gravity; it will also tend to move more easily in that direction, potentially causing an offset in the VC gap.
