after browsing over to howstuffworks.com i found this. i dont know if it applies to DTV though.

54 to 88 MHz for channels 2 to 6

174 to 216 MHz for channels 7 through 13

470 to 890 MHz for UHF channels 14 through 83

does anyone know if that applies to DTV?

Channels 2-6 are in the lower VHF band.

Channels 7-13 are in the upper VHF band.

Channels 14-69 are in the UHF band.

Channels 70-83 are no longer used for broadcast TV.

You don't need a special "HDTV" antenna. I get my OTA HDTV with a 50's style bow-time antenna I bought from Radio Shack.

Don't jump to the conclusion that you need a VHF/UHF antenna. Your sole VHF station is on the upper VHF band. You may have the same success I did. My NBC affiliate's digital signal is 10 and all the others are on the UHF band. With a CM 3021 (four bay bow tie) and an amp, I'm able to pull in all the signals just fine. BTW, I'm 15-20 miles from all the transmitters with plenty of dynamic and static multipath in my way.
