How Do I output a 1.78.1 resolution to my NEC XG from my HTPC?

489 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  kal
I've got a 1.78.1 screen and was wondering how I set my XG-852 to use a 1.78.1 resolution? Do I need powerstrip for this? If so, does anyone have timings for it?

Thanks,

Danny

Danny,

Your computer's video aspect ratio doesn't have to match the aspect ratio of your screen (1.78:1). Most of us run 'strange' resolutions that scale best and then simply stretch/shrink the image to fit the screen with the projector's internal controls.

An example: Since the NTSC DVD native resolution is 720x480, many with better projectors (like yours) will choose to run at exactly x2 the rez to get better scaling. In other words, 1440x960. The screen aspect ratio is irrelevent if all you care about is is DVD playback.

Other popular rez's are 1280x720 or 1440x720 since 960p is a bit high for most projectors other then good 8" EM machines (like yours) or 9" EM machines.

1280x720 is a real 1.78:1 ratio so it has one added advantage: If you want your computer desktop to also not look squished or stretched, then you have to make the two aspect ratio's match.

I run at 1080x720 (1.5:1 ratio) on my HTPC since my projector can't really resolve more then 720 lines and 1280 or 1440 across was also too much for it to resolve correctly so I backed down to 1080. My screen's 1.78:1

Thanks for the reply... I figured how how to do what I wanted using Powerstrip... Danny
I also have an XG 852, but I'll be feeding it with a Momitsu DVD player instead of an HTPC. I think the XG should handle 960p but I believe it's stretching things a bit. The word I get is that 720p is the sweet spot. Kal, do you know otherwise? Doug Baisey suggested 720p @ 70Hz.

So I think I just set up a memory in the XG for the [email protected] input, and set the geometry to squeeze the image down to a 1.85:1 AR. Haven't totally figured out how to do that with the XG yet, but I'm getting there. Danny, if you want to offer some helpful hints from one just-figured-it-out beginner to a haven't-figured-it-out-yet beginner, I'm all ears! You probably empathize the difficulties I'm going through, and could explain things to me in very small words. :)

I read another post once that Doug recommended 810P as the highest for an XG. He's done better, but he's Doug. You might want to try 1366x768. That way you could use 1024x768 for raster centering. I use 720P and it looks great. The computer is a great scaler/doubler and 720p is right for HDTV. There is no need to exceed 720p except of course, for hobby purposes.
I think you want 71.928 hz, not 70.

The guys I know with XG's run them at 810 or 816 lines, 16:9.
Kal,

Did you know you can use PS to switch resolutions for different apps? I am using 1280/768 for desktop and 720p when PDVD fires up. Just a note for those who want a decent sized desktop and get higher res for watching DVDs, or HDTV, etc.
garyfritz,

I went to 'display profiles', then 'configure'. Selected 'Advanced Timing Options', then added 1280x720. After restart, I selected the 1280x720 resolution, and went into the 'Advanced Timing Options' and adjusted the geometry to match a perfect 1.78:1 image. Now, my desktop is 1280x720 and when watching DVDs at full screen it scales 4:3 propery (side bars).

Danny
Unfortunately that won't help me, since those "Advanced Timing Options" are a feature of some HTPC tool, yes? I'll be running with a Momitsu V880N, not an HTPC.

Gary - I agree - 720p for a 16x9 screen is a pretty good starting point for an 8" EM-focussed XG. If you're running a 4x3 screen then you'll be using more raster height so 960p works out to about the the same number of lines/inch.

For the short time that I had an XG75 in the house, 720p ([email protected] to be specific) worked great on my 16x9 8' wide screen. Yes, if you set up your Sheimflug and astig/flare perfectly then you may see fine scan lines, but not from 8-12 feet back. This is probably why 800-820p is around the maximum that you'd probably need to go with an XG (assuming that Doug did the setup of course as someone else mentioned). 720p's most likely best for the rest of us.

I'm curious about the 70Hz recommendation as well... Mark is right that usually 71.928Hz is recommended in NTSC land to exactly triple the refresh rate of 24fps film shown in a normally 59.94Hz NTSC world (The math is: [59.94/60] x 24 x 3).

While I've never tried a Momitsu, I've heard that they do accept custom resolutions in the exact same format the PowerStrip puts out, so you can do a lot of custom rez/refresh rate stuff. Just get it set up right using a PC first then copy the settings over. (I don't have any direct links to this, but it's been discussed before in the forum so a search should find everything you're looking for).

Yup! Been meaning to set one up myself for when I show digital photos (just been too lazy) since I want the AR to be correct... Good hint for the others here though... I forgot to mention it.
