Yesterday I brought home my first plasma HDTV. It's a 50" Vizio P50 that I picked up for $150. I know it's a low end unit but heck, $150 seems like a good deal.

The trouble is that I'm a fairly hardcore gamer. Actually, the entire family is filled with gamers to the point that we cancelled the TV service and now we play games together, watch the occasion movie, or go outside and play together. Back on topic, how do I set it up to minimize input lag? I heard the Vizio's were notorious for lag and that has me concerned. (Plasma, LCD or both?)

I tried to do a little research on my own to get this question answered but I learned things like, "Don't use any image enhancing features." I'm too much of a newb to understand that. Are brightness, contrast, and etc. image enhancing features?

Exactly how would you set up your TV if the only thing you cared about were games?

Brightness, contrast type adjustments should not effect lag, things that might would be video noise reduction features and the such. Basic picture adjustments should not cause any problems. Turn off any function that would seem that it would need processing power to function correctly. I don't know what such features your tv has so its hard to say exactly.

Well my first question is how much lag are you actually experiencing?

It's absolutely horrible. I set up the TV tonight and I couldn't be more disappointed. This is just a totally inappropriate tv for a hardcore gamer. In my eyes it's not really a TV, it's more like a newspaper because it shows me recent history. I know games aren't important but it's not fun for me to lose all night. I can't remember the last time I did this poorly. I was hoping to see better than I did with my old 32" CRT TV but this really sucks.

Here are my settings:

Picture mode: Game

Under noise reduction I have motion and digital settings both set to zero

Fleshtone: Off

Dynamic contrast: zero

I don't know what else to do. I'm think of increasing the motion noise reduction since as it shows now I feel nearly blind when in motion, which is constantly.

I don't know what to say, I was excited about my first plasma TV and now I think it's destined for the bedroom.

I went out today and picked up a Panasonic G15. I haven't had a bad game since. I am now a true believer when it comes to all the little details that AV guys like to obsess over. If you need quality, they really do make a difference.

Thanks for the feedback everybody. BTW, Hhgregg price matched a printed out online ad. About 15 minutes of searching saved me $450. I just thought I'd pass that along in case it helps the next guy buying a new display.

I have been playing around with the settings on my PS3 and Kuro 5020 to reduce lag, and so far the thing that has made the most difference is I set the output on the PS3 to output only 1080P. It was outputting 720P for Call of Duty 4, and when I forced it to output only 1080P the lag seems to have decreased a good bit. In other words, the

PS3 seems to upscale 720 to 1080 faster than the Kuro can itself.

The way to force the PS3 to output only 1080P is to go to display settings and when setting up the output to your display choose Custom and only select the 1080P output. Now this will also output everything in 1080P from the PS3 so DVDs played will output 1080p, so if you want your TV to upscale movies you would have to change the setting.

I have noticed on my Xbox 360 that when it is set to 1080i (older, non-HDMI model) that there is slightly more lag than when it is set to 720p. My guess is that since it is all progressive that it takes less time to make up the other pixels than it is to hold the frame and draw it in progressive form. I hope to be swapping out with a newer, HDMI-equipped model soon...
