A regular single link DVI-D to DVI-D cable will work fine, since DVI-D is compatible with DVI-I outputs. I have a 3m cable from pacific cable and it works great.
There are really only two 16:9 DVI resolutions worth using with an HTPC/ae300, they are: 1280x768 and 1072x600. 1280x768 is a standard windows resolution, so you can just go into display properties and set it there (be sure to make the ae300 the primary display in advanced properties). For 1072x600, you'll need to add that resolution through powerstrip, though once this is done it will be also be available through the standard display properties. Good luck!
