On the left side of my proscenium, I need to make a hinged access door in order for accessibility for my SVS sub. It's a tight space behind the left main speaker so being able to get at the unit would be imperative should I need to remove the unit for maintenance. The SVS sub is 47" tall and 15" in diameter. Attached are some pictures for clarity.

This is the front view: The dimensions are from the wall 7 1/2" x 18 3/4" (angled part) x 102" (tall)

And finally, looking from the back up:

Any help, comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First, nice construction. The stage and arch. design elements in the shots look really cool.

To be clear, are you enclosing the SVS sub in that little mdf "closet" area? That doesn't sound like a good idea. You could end up with a mess for bass response.

However, rather than hinges, I would go with GOM or speaker cloth. Less moving parts, less rattle, easier to install, acoustically transparent. In fact, I had quite good luck with velcro on my fabric (I used velcro to attach one side of my fabric on the upper columns, to permit me access to the surrounds).

I've used fabric panels with these to hold them with good results in a number of projects. Solid panels work with them too.

I'm not a huge Velcro fan, I always seem to end up with attachment issues.

Not answering your question but are you sure that you want to put the sub behind the tower ? If you do ,( remember audio is not my forte as I say this) I'd make one whole section to snap with clips and not be solid MDF but only a GoM covered frame instead.

Art
Hi Art,

I challenged Dennis on the location of the sub and that's where his recommendation has me put it. I know the implications of corner placement subs with axial mode resonances, but apparently (according to Dennis) it's O.K. There is no other room to put the SVS (water heater as you once reffered to it) anywhere else! I will be installing a second sub in the room on the right side lower third of the room as well. Perhaps this will smooth out the lower frequency response...I hope.

Marc,

I'm not sure its the "location" of the sub in the room that Art and I were concerned about. It's the placement of the sub in an MDF enclosure that I think could be an issue....

Maybe not, but it seems funny to me.

Patrick,

Not sure what you mean...I have to make these panels out of MDF as per specifications to Dennis's plan. The MDF panel will be supporting a shelf for the left front channel, so to make the enclosure out of fabric (which will be covered in GOM, Linacoustic underneath the GOM) would be an impossibility. Maybe impossible is a too harsh a word, let me use difficult. And Yes, the SVS sub will be behind the MDF enclosure.

I am trusting Dennis in this as he is the acoustician.

Yes, you're paying Dennis, listen to us, not us idiots.

Mine is in the same location as yours, but there is a cutout of the MDF and it's fabric covered. If I ever have to get it out I'll have to remove a bit of trim and pull the fabric free - not that big of deal.

Good luck!

Not bad. What did you use for the hinges? Any idea what the hinges are rated to hold and what your access door with speaker weighs?

What kind of latching system are you going to use?

I don't know what you call this, but I bought it at Home Depot.

No idea on the load. Door with speaker estimated to weigh about 90 to 100 pounds. The hinges we used are these. They seem to be holding fine. We used six of them.
