I already know the answer to the question (you can't), but i was wondering how people are working around the problem that is created when you want to record consecutive shows and need to pad the time slot to make up for an incorrect clock.

Say you want to record ‘Charmed’, ‘Dark Angel’ and then ‘Xena’ which air at 8, 9 and 10 pm respectively. You cannot pad any of these shows, as the padding will cross into the time slot of the shows around it. If the shows are guaranteed the player will stop you or if the shows are not guaranteed it just will not record.

This means that you cannot pad consecutive shows and if the clock is incorrect then you will miss the beginning (or end) of each show. I have taken to manually record everything but this negates the purpose of the active guide as well as forcing me to figure the correct start and end times. This also means that I have to have faith the clock will not reset to another time which will invalidate the calculated times. I am looking for suggestions, is there another way around this problem.

Thanks for your help.

Julius's suggestion will work, of course, if all the shows are on the same channel. But, if they're on different channels the only choice at this point is the Manual Record feature.

We're working on a couple of ideas in this area for the future, but that's about it for now.
I'd vote for allowing pads to be into the show, like start recording 2 minutes after the show starts or stop 3 minutes early. Then, for us really lazy people, have an auto-setting so that when you choose to record a particular show, it looks to see if anything else is already scheduled to record that involves padding into that time, and automatically adjust the pad on the new recording to account for that, with appropriate warning message. Something tells me you already do the check, since I assume it would warn you of conflicts, so the other part should just be a read and set.

Mark,

If the shows are on the same channel, I just extend one of the shows to cover all of them. For instance, I record "Just Shoot Me" and "ER" by setting up a recording for "ER" to start 31 minutes early.

Snarler has the right idea, which has already been discussed at length. "Negative padding", or moving the start/end time INTO the scheduled timeblock, is the solution. It's not that the networks' clocks are off, but that they often intentionally move the schedule up by a minute or two.
