How do you set the phase on dual subs?

Is there a fool proof way of setting up dual subs so as to make sure they are in phase.

With a regular speaker I could always tell if they are out of phase by how much bass was being produced. I have been messing with my dual subs and I kinda get the feeling that I will not be able to hear the differance if they are out of phase.

First set one of them (the "primary", closer to the mains, whichever is easier to set, etc.) the usual way, so they mesh well with your system. Then, kill all but the two subs, and get the best (not always 'most') bass by adjusting the "secondary" sub.
