In terms of picture quality ?

I'm currently budgeting around 5K'ish for a 42+ size video screen. Originally I was looking at Plasma's but I've heard about burn in, etc.

How does DLP compare to Plasma's as far as picture quality. As the blacks better on DLP or similar ?

Picture quality is subjective. In my subjective opinion, I would buy the best plasma as I think it edges out the best CRT (opitimal lighting conditions). Better blacks in CRTs give you the sense of depth that plasmas lack. But the color fidelity and saturation in plasmas are outstanding.....DLPs are not competitive and neither are LCDs. Regarding black levels, I think plasmas edge out DLPs but I'm not sure. If you're happy with 42 inches, don't play games and won't torch the brightness settings, I'd definitely go with plasmas.

I'm a plasma fan, too. Of course, you can get great picture quality from both.

With the budget, you could also get a 50-inch plasma or a 60-inch DLP.

I would not worry about burn in for normal TV usage. The plasma forum has some very simple guidelines to follow that don't require much thought and will keep you safe.

Is saving money important? Is size important? Etc...

As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The best PQ I have ever seen was on a $11,000 Pioneer Elite plasma. However, when you step down to less expensive plasmas, I actually like the DLP PQ better. I bought my Samsung DLP 15 months ago, and absolutely love it. You really need to spend a lot of time looking at all your options with your own eyes, and going with what you think looks best (not what others like best).

I second BillP's comments. For $5k or less it seems to me that the DLP provides the best bang for the buck. I have had my 50" RCA DLP for a year and absolutely love it. My only caveat would be that some people see "rainbows" on DLPs. Watch DLPs carefully before you buy or, better yet, get a return privilege. For those who are bothered by rainbows, the phenomenon is a deal breaker for buying a DLP. I wish I could explain what rainbows look like but I can't see them -- lucky me.
