How does Samsung beat Sony to market by over a month

I still can't figure this out. How or why is Samsung the first one out of the gate. This is Sony's baby, how can they not be competitive with Samsung.

This is Amillians from the last Blu-ray delay. Has anything changed except the new June launch date?

Did everyone *really* think Blu-ray was launching on May 23rd? With *one* CE model? When you have 90% of the world's CE power onboard, launching a zeigeist format with exactly *one* CE model makes sense? And that model isn't even from one of the core companies? Hell, even HD DVD can launch with two models. We think. :)

The BDA needed a date--a relatively close one--to temper HD DVD's launch. They picked one. They needed someone to take one for the team and commit to that date. Samsung pulled the short straw. But gosh darnit...even though they are trying ever so hard, that date's merely a placeholder, to create a nice aura of U, hopefully enough U to keep those on the fence *on* the fence until BD *really* launches.

How about, Sony was counting on launching with the PS3 and so didn't invest in development for another player early enough?

Why do you think Samsung dropped the universal player idea ?
Sony has made an effort to include its partners in the process. Perhaps allowing them to ship first is one way. In addition, they are surely busy with the disks and the PS3.

I would think that customers would see the support by a variety of quality CE manufacturers as a plus for Blu-Ray.

And rumor has it that their first player is actually made by Pioneer.
How busy can they be with the discs?

no advanced audio content

MPEG-2 encoding vs. something new

single-layer (b/c they can't get dual-layer produced)

Don't sound that different from regular DVDs to me (except the resolution)

and how can it be that hard to make the player...it won't even play CDs!!! (for $1000 I might add).

WHAT??? More info, please.
It's no surprise considering how Samsung has been aggresive in putting out and saturating the market with every new technology they can muster and they have had record profits recently so they can afford it. On the other hand Sony has been very conservative for awhile and has been cutting products and just not rushing things. They have been reporting big losses recently also.

I sincerely doubt it. No other post on the entire forum says this, and Sony always uses it's own proprietary chips, etc. I do not believe Pioneer has ever made a player for Sony, so why now (since it's actually Sony's technology)?
Forgive me oh lord for my transgressions............................. what is the latest on the BD launch timing ?

Several movies out 6/20 & 6/27 with the Samsung and Pioneer players out in late June.
They beat them here in America, but Blu-Ray has been available for years in Japan. Perhaps Sony knows that one month isn't going to make at difference with those prices.

It should be noted that the Digital Bits has mentioned September for the Pioneer. I've seen this mentioned elsewhere, too, but don't remember where since I don't plan on buying it.

The new head guy at Sony is committed to reigning in costs in all areas, and has put a halt (temporary, one would hope) on future development of several technologies (including SXRD), as well as eliminating niche products (such as their robodog, Aibo). I just hope Sony doesn't wind up being just another CE company...it would be a shame if all of their new products ended up looking and performing like all of the mundane, unimaginative gadgets put out by so many manufacturers.

My friend in Osaka says the price on the Sony BD recorder hasn't dropped much in all these years. The model they intend to market here doesn't record, but I suppose they need to make sure that everything works perfectly when they introduce the players. God forbid something should be amiss, considering the huge marketing hype that has surrounded the introduction of the new formats and the constant media hysteria over "another Beta vs. VHS war". Is is a shame we no longer have huge American CE manufacturers...I bet someone would've come out with a next generation player that could play back true high definition content using existing red lasers. ;)
The Money is in the discs not the players. So Samsung getting out more players really is no threat to Sony, if anything its advantageos. The goal is to get as many players of any brand out as you can, so the format wins.

Fair enough but as of 4/21 it was coming out in June per two emails I received directly from Pioneer. If things have changed then I'll wait for official confirmation rather than Bill "Rumor" Hunt. I'll email Pioneer again and report back.
could it be that unlike what some HD DVD supporters want to portray BD=Sony. That because Samsung is one of the original 9 founders http://www.japancorp.net/Article.asp?Art_ID=4768
They haven't beaten anyone yet.

But even if they do, it's not that big of a time difference. Maybe Samsung's production facilities are faster. Maybe Samsungs design is a bit quicker to produce. Maybe Samsung wants to be first, so they will come out with only a few units in their initial release, while Sony is going to have a bigger first haul so it takes a while longer to make them. It could be anything really, given we're only talking about a few weeks lead.
But the issue is that it is not Sony's baby (if it was they might have a say) but the BDA's and in the BDA Samsung has the same pull and as much knowledge as one of the original 9 cofounders
