Thanks : >

Blue,

The "Alpine" is not a building. It is called the Alpine Tower and is on a "mountain" in NJ. As a crow flys I believe it is about 2 miles from the former WTC. There are no digital broadcasts now...only analog.

It has been said that by the end of the year digital boradcasts will resume from this temporary site.

I remember that someone mentioned that is about 200 feet lower than the WTC. Thw Alpine Tower is an FM radio tower that is being converted to TV.

For some particulars on the history of this site, and Mark Schubin's compelling account of the terrorist attack's affect on broadcasting and, more importantly, "broadcasters," (people) read Mark Schubin's Monday Memo at www.digitaltelevision.com . There's a place to click on Mark's site just down the left side of the homepage.

I assumed that this tower was located in Alpine, New Jersey which is about 17 miles north of the WTC. Is the tower actually as close as Lee says?

I also assumed that the tower was located in Alpine, New Jersey .

I tried finding it on the net but, nothing comes up.

Does anyone know the distance for sure from the WTC? 2 miles or 17 is a big difference.

Also, none of the antenna sites have been updated showing the new locations or distance.

Thanks so much

Here's the pertinent quote from Mark Schubin:

" - Within hours, Sinclair/Acrodyne offered assistance and,

Dielectric, Harris, and the New York broadcasters began recovery plans,

which clearly do NOT include waiting for a new WTC on which to place

antennas. The most likely candidate at the moment seems to be a

communications tower in Alpine, New Jersey, a few miles northwest of

Manhattan, which looks like a giant power pylon. It was the site of the

world's first FM broadcast and was a beloved spot of its creator, Major

Edwin Armstrong."

The Apline tower is near the NJ - NY border atop the Palisades. It is visible from both the George Washington Bridge and Tappan Zee Bridge. That area is not a mountain per se, but more of a high plateau.

Ok, I used this address " 59 route 9w Alpine NJ 07620 .

How close it is to the Alpine tower i don't know ,but the address is located in Alpine .

This is what came up for the distance from Alpine to the WTC.

It varies about 17 miles.

Check this link...click on "coverage maps" and type in zipcode..07620

Speaking of NY antennas.... Check out the latest National Geographic magazine. They have two pictures of the antenna on the top of the Empire State Building. The pictures are of the person changing a light bulb on the top of the tower, it gives a unique and dramatic perspective.
