So last night I was watching TV and was curious how hot my ESA/Akai/Samsung Plasma was on the back. I have the ESA unit and all of it's heat sinks are up near the rear top edge of the display and it's all aluminum backing with vents. I touched it and it was almost so hot you couldn't hold your hand on it. I got out my outdoor grill fork thermometer and stuck it on the top of the unit for a about 15 mins. The temp reached 128 degrees F when the room's temp was 79 degrees F.

This seems insanely hot to me. I have this unit on a table while we shop for an amoire but I can't imagine how hot this thing will get inside of amoire or any enclosure.

Has anyone else recorded temps from their Plasma?

btw, according to my grill thermometer this was almost the ideal cooked temp for grilled fish :)

Well I used to work with some folks who heated up their lunch burritos by wrapping them in tin foil and placing them on the power supplies of a main frame computer (they also kept their beer cool, and hidden from prying eyes, by placing it in the air-conditioned space under the raised computer room floor). Worked a treat until they leaked burrito juice one day and shorted out the computer.

And then I had a patio heater -- one of those gizmos that looks like a big floor lamp with a raging fire on top -- that came with a tiny warning label saying that you really REALLY shouldn't hang clothing on the patio heater to dry.

Seems you have to be extra careful with some folks.

So you should write Samsung and complain that there's no warning label on your plasma to tell people not to grill fish on it. And keep an eye on any guests who are tempted to re-heat their coffee.

That seems a little warm, but most commercial grade electronic components are rated for operation up to an ambient temperature of 70°C (158°F). Industrial grade components are usually rated for at least 85°C (185°F).

Operating temp of my panny is 32 degrees f to 104 degrees f. That is temp of the air so I'm sure that you're fine.
