The Toshiba HD-A1 is $250 at Best Buy new in the box. Assuming they have any in stock.

Sony: $299 Blu-ray Player In 3 YearsCompany executives say price declines will follow DVD history.

By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (January 17, 2007) -- Waiting for those $999 Blu-ray players to drop under $500?

Well, you may have to wait awhile. Sony says it could be three years before the player drops to $299 or $399.

In an interview with CNET's News.com, Sony President Stan Glasgow noted that DVD player prices took a few years before they reached more affordable levels.

"If you go back to when DVDs came into play, it took about three years until they got into price points of $299 to $399. I suspect it's about the same thing here with Blu-ray. I think it's going to take up to three years to get down to those price points, possibly a little longer," Glasgow said.

Stop the trolling! You don't have an HD-A1!

I will call your bluff: sell it to me for that price right now!

Gladly... it's $50 more than I'd probably get on ebay.
I would say that summer 2007 for hd dvd and then fall of 2007 BR players will be 100.00.....because HD DVD will have won. Good news is i'll still be able to play games on my PS3.
HD DVD players: Before the year is up.

Blu Ray players: Not until the PS3 hits that price point, ie not for a long long time unless Sony changes their current 'PS3 is lowest priced BD player on the market' strategy.

pretty much agree. bd is basically a ps3-only format. the CEs better switch to hd dvd or pretty much assume they aren't going to sell anything.

...or...

they do undercut the ps3 price and the ps3 goes into an even bigger sales dive.

anyway if xbox buyers will buy an add-on to get hd dvd, then ps3 buyers that watch movies will buy hd dvd standalones for

"I'd say 90 percent of the people who (own) PS3s are playing that Blu-ray disc on it or playing other Blu-ray discs on it," Stringer told News.com.

I have no doubt that most PS3 owners have played Blu-ray movies. However, I also suspect that the rate of movies purchased by PS3 owners is lower on average than the rate by people with standalone Blu-ray and standalone HD DVD players, as well as lower than the rate by people with the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on.

A lot of eBay auctions have outrageous shipping prices.

I got one last month for less than US$200 (Future Shop in Canada), but it was a demo, with no box so no free movies. However, I'm not sure the HD-A1 really counts for the $250 price target, because it's a discontinued model.

In any case, I do think the driving force for price will be the Chinese players. They will have a lower MSRP and a lower wholesale price than Toshiba players and players from other companies. My November 2007 - April 2008 prediction is based on when I think the Chinese players will actually hit the North American market.

$250? New current production player? From China? I am going to say early 3rd quarter.

It's a predicition right? Non-binding...
