"Can Destiny Rule One’s Heart?"
Synopsis:
A man and a woman living in the same apartment nearly 20 years apart wake one day to find that their timelines have merged, and they're in the same place and time.
My Take:
In this charming romantic comedy, a man and a woman living in the same apartment nearly twenty years apart wake one day to find their timelines have merged. Now they’re stuck with one another, unless they can work together long enough to find a way back to their normal lives... if destiny will allow it.
There have been a host of time travel romance flicks, most of which work under a similar premise involving destiny and how the decisions made in one period can impact those in the other etc. How Long Will I Love You is a bit different in that it brings together two very different people by merging their respective timelines, one in 1999 and the other in 2018, with the epicenter being the same apartment, that each occupied in their time timeline. They awaken to find one another within their apartment, merged together with their belongings and split access to the bathroom, kitchen, bed and so forth. Access to the outside world/1999/2018 is done using the same door which has a handle on each side. Only he can open the 1999 handle and only she can open the 2018 handle but, each can enter the others time period once the door is open.
The film opens with brief introductions to the couple, both of whom are struggling financially and to some level, personally. Clearly in need of one another, after a bumpy start they bond, forming a quasi-friendship that soon evolves into more than that as they slowly begin to unravel the rules of their unusual situation.
I am most definitely a romantic and am easily taken in by films like How Long Will I Love You. After a bit of ebb and flow initially, these characters both grew on me. The narrative’s explanation of how this time/space anomaly occurred was sketchy but, that was easy enough to overlook given events the occur later in the story. All the I’s aren’t dotted and T’s aren’t crossed but, this film has enough charm and flights of fancy to deliver a sprightly love story that is easy digestible.

How Long Will I Love You comes to Blu-ray Disc from Well Go USA featuring 1080p AVC encoded video and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound.
A variety of visuals are effectively used in this film to help set the tone/setting based upon the director’s vision. Colors can vary from being sullen and inanimate to vivid with warm vitality. Skin tones are lifelike with natural tonality and descriptive variation. Images onscreen are primarily detailed and sharp especially during close up and mid-level pans. There are occasions where sharpness wavers, particularly during long rage camera shots, however it appears to be innate to the photography. Contrast is a bit uneven with certain scenes, especially bright exteriors, appearing a bit blown out with overdriven whites, while others look just fine. Black levels are slightly elevated while discerning shadow delineation provides excellent perceptibility during scenes shot at night or in lower lighting. Overall, I found this to be a solid high definition presentation that seemed a good match for the source material.
The Mandarin 5.1 channel lossless surround mix features dialog that is full bodied with defining tonal characteristics and prominent soundstage position. High level detail is readily apparent as sound effects, music and voices are rendered with enriching clarity and depth. There is little call for surround activity and extended dynamics however there are a few instances that provide a discernable level of spatial envelopment accompanied be punchy low frequency enhancement. I found the presentation to be complimentary and enjoyable.
Bonus Features:
Written and directed by Lun Su How Long Will I Love You is a time travel romantic comedy that doesn’t reinvent the wheel but, manages to deliver a charming and lightly entertaining film experience that provides the type of escapism that genre fans enjoy. It comes to Blu-ray from Well Go USA featuring solid high definition audio/video. How Long Will I Love You is time well spent and perfect for a date night movie.
