How many are using Microperfs w/ Digital PJs? Problems?

203 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  KFung
Have been reading here and there that microperfs are problematic with DLPs, D-ILA, and LCDs (moire patterns?

Any truth to this or are CRT's the only way to go with a Microperfed screen?

Thanks

There's not really a serious problem with microperf and digital projectors. There *are* problems with certain higher resolution LCD's and one reported problem with the LT150. High resolution LCD sometimes have problems because their larger screen door interacts with the perfs, the most common model is the Sony 10HT (although the PLV-60 will suffer from the same problem). It also depends on your screen size, it is a combination of screen door and the size of screen. Almost all DLP's should be problem free and there have been no reported problems with D-ILA's (other than one report of light moire at a particular screen size).

I have no problems with a DILA and microperf'd grayhawk, and the dead-on center channel really recreates the theater experience.

Jeff, Hey I just had to reply and tell you how timely you post is. I was just getting ready to post the same question. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif I'll just sit back and see what the responses are.

Curious as to what screen size that was?

"Your priorities will be different-its the weighting that counts!"
I am considering a Greyhawk 100" wide microperf screen with possibly a Sanyo PLV-60HT. Would this combination be expected to result in moire patterns?
I am going to place a 120" wide screen with a digital projector (e.g. the JVC GT150 or the likes) on my 2.35 aspect Microperf.

CRT won't do a Microperf of that size, so I am stuck with digital.

I hope it will be O.K.

Scott,

As I mentioned in your other thread, you may have problems with moire as others have had problems with the Sony 10HT which uses the same chips. I don't know if it will affect your particular setup, there is (of course) only one way to tell, you must see for yourself. You can eliminate the moire problem with a Cygnus IMX depixilating lens (or depixilizing... I can never remember), but that is a $900 option, it will greatly reduce your screen door though.

Jeff,

It really depends on which particular digital projector you are planning to get, as I mentioned above only the 10HT's, PLV-60's, and one case of the LT150 have problems.

Thanks for the info. It is good to know that if I go with a Stewart Greyhawk microperf screen/Sanyo PLV-60HT combination there is a solution to the potential moire problem.
Yep, it's not a serious problem just as long as one is aware of the added cost necessary to get the setup working, of course the elimination of moire is just a happy side effect of the depixilating process (which is really quite helpful on an LCD).
