How many flat screen LCD tv's will be LED this year?

How many were at CES 07?

The only one I know for sure coming out in July is the Samsung 81 Series.

And why will LED be better?

Sony has also 70 incher LCDLED coming very soon:

It depends how you define better:

- color rendering will be better since LED backlighting uses red, green, blue diodes with high color purity. This can be compared to standard backlighting which uses white lamps for the extraction of colors via color filters.

- LED BL makes possible controlling light intensity and by this improving contrast

On the negative side:

- LED BL is much more complicated, requires active control of light output since it depends on temperature and aging

- LED BL consumes more power

- costs much more at least now, Sony 70 incher is $ 33 000

Also CCFLs have mercury, and dim over time. LED backlighting is a plan but it is still a bit of a way off until they can get it on par with CCFL in terms of cost. It will never be as good as CCFL in terms of power/brightness.

In terms of lumens/watt efficacy, LEDs have surpassed fluorescent light sources some time ago and are pulling away fast.

Yes and no. LEDs are a point sourse of light. When you compare the amount of LEDs required to spread 500 nits of luminance out of a 42" dia. LCD, I am afraid that the CCFL will win by a long way.

On a small PDA and cell phone display, where one or two LEDs can light up a 3" display adequately, yes, LEDs win.

So you were not talking about lm/W but about lumens per source of light. Regardless, CCFLs are on their way out for LCDs of any size.
