How much better HMDI vs component?

806 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  miniz
I was wondering if I should go HDMI to my JVC LCOS or stick with component and the STB? The STB upconverts to 1080i, but I have it set to 'pass' which passes the original signal to my set. Would I see any improvement going to HDMI? Should I stick with 'pass' or have it upconvert everything to 1080i?

I have the Zenith 318 upconverting to 1080i, and it's not as good over DVI, so I feel like I'm wasting the HDMI input.

Apparently your you have a 1920x1080 native reolution LCOS system. I would not be surprised if the JVC did a better job of upconverting what is "passed through" from your STB (such as 720p).

Since HDMI video is just DVI video using a different connector there should be no difference between the two as far a PQ is concerned. You just need to try the different combinations and decide what is best for you based on your viewing habits, viewing distance etc.

Many people do not sense a nititable difference between component and DVI/HDMI even on a digital technology set.
change the firmware on the 318 if you want the DVI output to look better then component. Your just running the unit on version 1 firmware, which has a major white crush issue on DVI. Be aware that after the update, you will no longer be able to get HD out of component, however you can always change it back to version 1.
miniz, didn't know they fixed the white crush over DVI. Is the newer firmware showing better results with DVI compared to component?

walford- So there isn't much difference between HDMI vs component with cable? Not surprised. So I'll leave the STB on 'pass' or should i have it upconvert to 1080i? Wonder if SD looks better when 'passed' rather then upconverted? I'll have to play with that more, just wanted others' opinions.
Version 1 firmware=use of component. (you already have it)

Version 2 firmware=use of DVI.

Load whichever firmware corresponds to what output you would like to use. DVI will look just as good, if not a little better then component with ver. 2 firmware.

miniz, so if I want to go DVI, use firmware 2. Then, should I not like it, I can go back to component but I'd have to use the firmware 1? I read the thread about that update, doesn't really say if DVI at 720p is better then 1080i at component. Also, the update will make my unit an LG?
If your cable service provides HDNet's Tuesday 8 am (eastern) 1080i test patterns you may be able to contrast the two output formats with hard resolution numbers. Using HDNet, for example, I found my new SA8300HD delivers ~45% better maximum horizontal resolution (1290 lines) compared to my former SA8000HD converter (only 890 lines). Yet another converter on a different cable system provides ~1335 lines. This measurement technique was used, and other readings would help to compare cable systems. In some locales, the 8000HD has notoriously 'soft' HD images. -- John
I find very little difference between component and DVI connects.

Yes, load whichever firmware you want that makes whichever connection you want work, or work right.

Check the DVD player section of this website for much more info on this player. there is a big thread devoted to it. I'd read that before I changed anything.
