How to clean my Panasonic plasma TV after what happened tonight...

23445 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  vinnie97
So tonight some diet soda was spilled in front of my TV and some of it splashed back up and onto my TV. I grabbed a clean t-shirt and wiped off the diet soda from the tv.

When the TV is turned off, you can see the streaks from the diet soda, but when the TV is on, you can't notice it.

Is their a way for me to clean off my screen to remove the streaks from the TV without damaging the plasma screen?

Thank you for your help,

Howdy,

Kind of a bummer, but with patience you should be able to get it cleaned up ok. First check out your instruction manual, there is a small section in the back that details Panasonic's recommend cleaning procedure both for light finger prints and for more substantial cleaning.

Stay away from any wood based products such as paper towels etc. Do NOT use any alcohol or ammonia based cleaner (Windex etc.). Use a soft, lint free cloth, or high quality micro fiber cleaning cloth.

My G25 manual suggests using a very dilute mixture of mild dish soap and distilled water. Be sure and turn off your TV first and let it cool down. Do NOT apply the solution directly to the screen, but rather apply a small amount to the cleaning cloth and rub a small area gently to clean, using a separate dry, soft, lint free cloth to gently dry the screen.

Take your time and do a small area at a time. The idea is to not disturb or scratch the special coating on your screen. Good luck.

I did read the back of the manual after your advice and it says the same thing.

Is their any particular dish soap out there I should use? I mean, there are so many and I don't know if any of the "extras" some of the dish soaps have would cause harm to the television.

One other question, when I go to a store, lets say Wal-Mart, what department tends to carry the lint free cloths? I want to make sure I purchase the right type of cloth.

Thank you,

You COULD try just damp microfiber cloth first. Then, if that fails, use a tiny bit of dish soap in water, then go over it again with a clean, soap free damp microfiber cloth to finish the job.

I find the microfiber towels you can buy at an auto parts store works great for regular cleaning of the screen.
Thanks guys/gals for the help and advice again.

I went ahead and went to the auto store and picked up 2 of those Microfiber tells that were recommended. Worked like a charm.

Thank you again for your help,

Stay away from computer screen wipes. My wife thought she was doing me a favor one time by using them. The smooth plasma screen was full of streaks. I ended up using a lightly wet cotton cloth with water and a little Windex sprayed onto the cloth. Once you get the gunk off you may have to buff off any remaining streaks with a dry cloth. I think I only cleaned my plasma screen a total of three times over the five years I had it. The less the better.

You can look for dish soap that has the least number of extra ingrediants, but honestly, at the recommended dilution level (100 parts water to 1 part dish soap) pretty much any dish soap should be safe.

However, I would recommend that you invest in some distilled water because most all of the contaminants have been removed, and it's inexpensive to boot.

Walmart's micro fiber cloths are probably fine. Personally I use the ones that I bought for my camera lenses and eye glasses (after washing them of course). By the way, it's good to note that it's important to always clean your micro fiber cloths (mild soap and water, then air dry) before EACH use. That gets rid of any dirt that might have been picked up during it's last use.

Now, for cleaning, turn off your plasma and let it cool down, then start by finding the most unobtrusive area affected, possibly nearest the edge, and try your procedure on a small part of that area to see your results. If you're satisfied, then simply continue the process on successive small areas until it's all gone.

You're smartest move was to not rush into wiping it off, and then finding the proper information to help you successfully clean it with the least chance for damage. Good luck, and do let us know how it works out.

Hmmmm...... alcohol and ammonia based cleaners such as Windex are highly discouraged by most plasma manufacturers. I've never tried it my self, but from what I've read, I'd shy away from that.
Off-topic: Don't drink diet soda, it's worse for you than the real thing (aspartame is a carcinogen).
