I have a JBL-1200 subwoofer with which I am happy. My son has given me his subwoofer, a Sony SA-W2500.

So I have the bright idea to hook up 2 subwoofers. (I hope it is a bright idea)

Both subwoofers have speaker-level and line-level inputs.

My 7.1 AVR (Sony STR-DG720) only has a subwoofer line-level output.

So, please how do I hook up two subwoofers? (and if you have comments on if it is a bright idea or not)

Thank you

As to placement, I guess I was just going to put them on top of each other, or a few feet apart. Read that article you gave. So placement should be thought about. Got it.

For my existing and already connected and working subwoofer (the JBL SW-1200), I have a subwoofer cable from the AVR's subwoofer line-level output to a Y adapter to the subwoofer's low level input R and L connections. This works perfectly.

But my question is about how to connect the second subwoofer. Maybe you are suggesting that I split again the speaker cable and use the second split to the new subwoofer's in connection.

I was thinking of adding speaker wire to the JBL's low level output terminals, and connecting those wires to the speaker-level input terminals on the Sony SA-W2500.

Would that work?

I already have Y connector so I was able to perform tests.

Tested with one subwoofer by itself, the other subwoofer by itself, and both combined.

(Seemed to make a difference in connecting to the JBL whether I plugged it into the R or L. I don't think it is supposed to make a difference, but it seemed to work better in the L than in the R. When just using the JBL by itself I use the Y connector and plug into both the R and L.)

Anyway, according to our tests (with my son and I listening) two subwoofers together did NOT sound better than a single subwoofer. The JBL subwoofer versus the Sony subwoofer, it seemed like the JBL handled lower frequencies more, while the Sony handled middle frequencies. Since I am not an expert in the slightest your opinion may be much different.

Why did either one individually sound better than the two together? Probably because the old subwoofer is a 12" and the new one is a 10", the two subwoofers were connected back to back and pointing in opposite directions, hard to get the same volume on both, hard to get the top end crossovers set equal, because one subwoofer was facing an open space and the other subwoofer was facing a corner.

Tested using Chapter 2 of Pacific Rim.
