How to connect both active and passive sub?

632 Views 17 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  zibanez
I currently have 1 powered polk sub connected to my amp. I plan on picking up a nice passive paradigm sub I saw at a local thrift shop tomorrow. Can I connect both subs by using the front left and right terminals from my amp to power the new passive sub then connect my front left and rights to the passive subs output? Will this work? Any help would be great. Thanks!

As long as this Paradigm sub has speaker level inputs and outputs you should be okay.

Why the desire to buy a passive sub?
Hopefully your amp has enough juice for the sub, too. Do you have an amp or a receiver? Is this how you have your active sub connected also? Or do you have a pre-out for the active sub?
Yes it has both inputs and outputs with a built in crossover, it's an SB110. Not sure why I want it, it's just there i guess. One thing I'm not sure about is how the auto calibration on the receiver will level both the left and right speakers as well as the sub if they are on the same output from the receiver. How does that work?
Yes it's a pioneer receiver (VSX-823) and I have the active sub connected to the sub output.
Do you know the impedance or sensitivity of the sub? That receiver may not play well with a low impedance sub, or a sub with a low sensitivity rating.
All my speakers are 8 ohms, the passive sub I'm looking at is also 8. It says 42-100 hz frequency response. Rated for 15-200 watts. Thanks for the help by the way.
Hopefully its not too power hungry! Good luck!

ps You realize the .1 channel will still be only handled by your active sub....you have a level adjustment plan to integrate this sub?

your auto calibration should hear it and set your fronts to LARGE
Ahh I get it, makes sense, should of thought if that.
To actually use the passive subwoofer you your receiver you will need to have its own external amp. Which will be $150 minimum

What are the exact model numbers of BOTH these subwoofers so we can better help you?
Picked up the sub which also came with some nice titan speakers. I found an old receiver I had lying around and am using that as a dedicated amp for the second sub. Much fuller sound now. Thanks again for the help guys.

Yeah, me, too! I was still thinking of your first post about amps....rather than your MCACC function.

How did you setup the second receiver?
I just ran an RCA cable from my main amps sub out into my old amps cd input. At least this way I can control the volume of the paddive sub and don't have to draw any power from the main amp.
Its on the same output as the powered sub so the auto calibration will adjust both at the same time. Also, by using the volume control on the dedicated receiver I added. If I turn the receiver off it turns off the extra sub and I'm back to where I started.

How did you set level?
Insomnia doesn't always pay off in the clearly thinking department
. Seemed like it should be harder than that like with Audyssey, which would eq them together which wouldn't necessarily be a good thing but MCACC probably only sets level and at the 63hz point on your avr? Where did you put the mvc on the second receiver?
See less See more
I prefer using external sub amp rather than connecting it to av receiver speaker terminal
