My TV is over 3 years old and I am realizing I cannot watch Netflix on it. How to connect my Panasonic TV TH-42PE7U to the internet?

TVs of that vintage most likely did not support Netflix or much streaming --if any. Your cheapest and easiest way to Netflix and much, much, much more is to pick up a Roku box. These can be had for as little as $49 up $99 depending on the capabilities you want. The basic support 720p output and the high end units support 1080p and DD streaming from netflix, worth it if you plan on connecting to a home theater setup, not needed if no. All but the most expensive model connect wirelessly to your network, the high end model gives you a choice of wired or wireless, if possible I always go for a wired connection.

You could also buy a Blu ray player that is internet capable and connect to Netflix through the player.

Thanks for the info I had never heard of Roku. If I buy a Roku box, can I use it as a wireless router for my laptop to connect to?

I seriously doubt it. The Roku box connects to your wireless system and then inputs the signal to your receiver/tv. The Roku box has nothing to do with routing.

Go look at all the content Roku offers, there is a massive amount. Everything from Netflix, Pandora, TED and all kinds of games to even porn. All there much free and low cost. With a Blu Ray player you will get a small fraction of the content Roku delivers, and te Roku box often will give you a better quality feed too. . You will require a router to feed the Roku box though.
