Greetings folks & Happy New Year!

I've taken apart every several years about every remote I've ever owned to clean it and spiffy up those contacts under the rubber buttons & make them more responsive. Some come apart by screw, some by finding the right spots to push or pull some plastic snaps/clips/claws & others a combination of both.

I'll be dog goned if I can open up these little silver & black wonders. I see no screws and tried my trusty flat blade jeweler's screw driver to separate the casing in two & find those pressure claws/clips but to no avail. I don't want to gouge the plastic & really have 2 remotes that need some cleaning of contacts under a couple buttons, the remotes work stubbornly but work. So do not need advice on buying new or what the latest greatest remote is).

I searched the forum but found no examples. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Long live RepalyTV. Blessings to all!

My Sonic Blue remote for the 5040 has a phillips head screw in the battery compartment between the batteries. Pry out on the black bottom section to release it from the silver top. The bottom section has the plastic tabs that snap into the silver top section.

OK, I'm confused. If the tabs were on the black part, wouldn't you pry out the silver part?

I think this is helpful, too, even though it is for a different remote:

There is also a very effective tool that iPodjuice.com sells that doesn't dent up a remote (but I haven't used it for a 5000 remote:

Wow! Thank you so very much. For anyone else reading along, that is a fantastic set of instructions. The tool looks very good; I'll order one.

To clean ours, I took out the batteries, and then held it upside down and cleaned it with a q-tip soaked in isopropyl 90% alcohol. I left it upside down overnight to dry. Cleaned up very quickly.

I wouldn't want to risk a ReplayTV remote in the dishwasher - they aren't easy to replace at this point. Plus the alcohol was so quick to try.
