How to Disconnect These Onkyo Wire/Board Connectors?

Hi All,

I'm trying to remove the front panel of an Onkyo NR717. Is there a specific way or trick to remove these two different plugs? I don't want to just yank on them as I've seen some that have hidden clamps, or releases.

Any idea on how this cable is removed, other than just yanking on it?

I tried a little upward pressure but this seems very solidly connected. How does it come out?

To remove the cable from your "plug B", see this:

Unfortunately, the man hides the actual removal with his hand. Short version: you press down on the top of the connector to release the cable. (It grips the tinned wires. There is no actual connector soldered to the cable.)

I'm not familiar with the exact type of "plug A", but I believe that it's holding the ribbon cable directly. Nothing attached to the ribbon. I think that you just flip up the blue thingy (gettin' technical here) to release the cable. As I'm uncertain, be gentle.

Best of luck.

Maybe a competent repair tech (which I am not) will weigh in.

Thanks Bob. I figured out Plug B thanks to your help. I still can't figure out "A".

On Plug B, the entire middle section, the entire area around the wires is spring loaded. It can be depressed down and sinks into the entire socket using the tabs on the left and right sides. However, the socket might need to be sprayed with contact cleaner or lube to get it moving smoothly (mine was stuck). It might be best to use needle nose pliers, press down on the left and right sides at the same time, then pull up on the wire. The wires are long, go deep into that socket.

One down, one to Go. I still can't figure out "A".

That blue thing (most visible in the right most picture for plug A) doesn't flip up?
Thanks Bob,

Actually, there is no "blue" section on Plug A. That is a weird reflection from a bad picture.

Here's how Plug A is removed per an Onkyo repair tech. There are two black buttons on the top, one on each side. You can see these in picture 2. You push these down and it releases the outer edges of the cable. Unfortunately mine were stuck and why I had no movement in them. Once cleaned, they push down, albeit a very small amount.

Good to know.

Plug A also looks a bit chewed up. I hope that's another illusion.

A always screws people up. The process is that you press down on the two black buttons (one on each side of the top) and pull the cable straight out. Here are two pictures (before and after) that show how I do this. Hold the cable with your pointer fingers. Press down on the black buttons with your thumbs and use your pointer fingers to pull the cable out. Notice on the second picture that there are two small cutouts in the cable. These cutouts are used as retainers by the black buttons and when you press the buttons down, it moves the retainers out of the way so that the cable can be removed.
