I just came across 'Helen of Troy' which appears to be displayed in 1.85:1. I was wondering if there is any possible way to fit this and other widescreeen programs to screen the same way done with DVD.

(I have standard cable and directv, but sadly no HD.)

I notice many widescreen presentations (music videos, commercials, films, etc.) and want to discover a way to avoid excess stretching, which makes 16:9 look 4:1.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Just use the zoom/crop mode to fill the letterboxed program to fill the 16:9 screen. Its the same mode used for non-anamorphic widescreen DVD movies. There is one mode that doesn't stretch, it zooms into the 16:9 image area only for this purpose. Use it for all letterboxed programs like Enterprise, Angel, ER, Srargate-SG!, and so on.
