(If someone has already used it, does it work well on the Mac?)

I've been using it for a while now with my 622, and it works well on my Windows laptop. I can't get it to extract properly from my Macs. It performs the extraction, but for some reason it isn't able to sense the end of file, and won't "finish" the extraction.

I've got a thread running in the forum now trying to get the HD videos converted to something that is actually usable in Frontrow or VLC.

Thanks for this pointer... very much considering the jump in Feb when the free HD DVR special starts.

I could only get "copy freely" material out of my cable 8300HD (firewire), so this would be a nice improvement.

Be curious to see if the Mac issues (mentioned by nightowl) get worked out.

Mike

The software is public domain now, so any improvements will have to be by someone who is willing to make the changes and then post their working software. If I had the programming knowledge, I would be working on it myself.

Free Dish HD DVR (ViP622)? That's news to me. Will it be restricted to new subscribers? Do you have a link?

Thanks.

Edit: Is this offer what you have in mind? http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/p...er/index.shtml

It was mentioned at satelliteguys.us that at CES E* announced that beginning February 1, the 622 will be available as a free receiver for new customers, and with a contract for existing customers.

Hi:

I have a Dish DVR (522 model, not HD) and ant to move some of my recordings to my iMac running Mac OS X 10.4. Is there any way to do this that does not require cracking open the box?

Dish DVRs don't live forever, ours shows certain signs saying it won't either, and cracking open the box voids whatever warranty there is....

Thanks

If the device has Firewire (and it's enabled) then you have various software options including FireRecord, AVCCapture or AVCNoodle. If you want to capture SD analog then you can use Miglia, Elgato or Equinux USB products.

HD, as well as SD:) It requires you to crack the PVR open, but it sounds simple enough. Haven't tried it, but it may be useful to someone here.

Sounds like the Happauge HDPVR 1212 with EyeTV is a much more realistic solution. About $200 and it records SD or HD component video. EyeTV allows exporting, burning, editing, etc.

True, Eph, but back when that was written there was no Hauppauge yet, and it's only very recent that OS X software like EyeTV or Steve Toth's app supported it. At least in the case of Anno with his 522 I don't think his model even has component, so his best bet might be the EyeTV 250+.

I would love to find a way to access the HD recordings I have on my Dish 211K with the external drive option for DVR, but I don't think it's possible. Eventually, if you still want to receive programming, Dish will swap out your old receivers with MPEG-4 models.
