How to hook up a SACD player to a 7.1 receiver

1645 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  ted_b
I have a SACD player that I would like to hook up to my 7.1 receiver.

I was wondering if people are splitting the surround channel coming from the DVD player to feed both the surround and rear input on the receiver.

Any ideas???

Personally, I'd lean towards keeping the discrete channels of SACD as is, since in some cases you have 4.0, 5.0, 5.1
Ben,

Some receivers will automatically output each surround channel through its respective side and rear speakers. On other receivers, the sound only comes through the side speakers while the rears go silent. Have you checked to see how your's works?

If your receiver has 7.1-channel analogue inputs, then you can use Y-splitters on your SACD player's surround outputs so that sound comes out of all four surround speakers for a more enveloping sound.

Best,

Sanjay

That is what I was thinking. Does splitting the signal decrease the level of that channel?

If one wanted to keep the SACD or DVD-A 5.1 channels, which of the 2 back channels (rear or side) would be used?

Probably, but you can always double check with a SPL meter and your SACD player's test tones. If there is a decrease (probably mild), then re-calibrate the surrounds.

If I had to choose one pair of surrounds, I would use the speakers at my sides.

Our sense of spaciousness comes from lateral (sideways moving) sound. The speakers behind you definitely add to overall envelopment (though mostly for frequencies above 1 or 2 kHz), but they don't deliver the spacial cues that speakers at your side can.

Personally, I use both pairs of surrounds for better envelopment when listening to SACD and DVD-A.

My $.02. Depends where the rears are located. If less than 150 degrees, try using them. Newer NARAS standard likes 135 degrees and older standard is 110 degrees. Sides are typically 90.

I split the signal for my hir-rez stuff, but only out of necessity, as my rears are too far behind me to rely solely on. Yes, the signal is a bit lower so I have them recalibrated for SACD and DVD-A. Not a problem as I use a dedicated analog 5.1 preamp (with front pots for calibrating) for this, not my digital Lexicon one for movies. I have a splitter switch and remove the split when listening to 7.1 from movies (Logic7).
