I have a Sony KV-30HS420 that im trying to hookup to my ati x700 card but i cant seem to get it to show the whole screen and its kind of wavy on some objects, Ive been hooking it up with component video to the card which i prefer sense i'll need the hdmi for a hd dvd player sometime anyway. Thanks

is the picture going pass the edge of the TV, well thats overscan and its normal

but ATI has had overscan adjustment in their drivers for ages

I would suggest using the 1776x1000i setting

it might not fit perfectly but should be close, and overscan is normal for TVs

all TVs have overscan, the newer microdisplays do have less though

and then the waviness is the geometry of the tube, call a Sony service center for repair if it bothers you

Thanks kny, Think ive got the geometry and overscan perfect but still cant get the text clear viewing on the computer.
thats normal 1080i is interlaced meaning only half the resolution is displayed at once

that blurs small text and causes a flicker

try using 720x480p if you want readable text, the idea behind this is, you need a progressive scan resolution for high quality text kinda like when using a PC monitor

all those resolutions are progressive
That TV has a native resolution of about 840x1080 so exceeding and 840 wide screen resolution will cause some pixels to not be displayed when drawing characters giving unclear text.
it is probably not 840x1000

the TV only has to display 540 horizontal lines at once in 1080i mode

so unless you counted, I would not make state that as fact

furthermore is questionable whether the XS/XBR even have 1000 lines vertically(horizontal lines) probably closer than the HS but still questionable IMO

I said about. I did count the vertical lines and it came out at about 800. Since I was going blind counting, I just gave Sony the benefit of the doubt at 840.

Thanks for the replys, So does this mean this tv isnt fully hd sense its not full 1080i? Thanks
no CRT directview or rear projection has a full 1920x1080i resolution

the fact that the TV is displaying a 1080i scan rate means it is HD

the best directviews are teh Sony XS/XBRs (excluding the 32") which have 1400 lines of resolution from left to right side of TV

and consider the price difference between a CRT HDTV and a 1080p SXRD or DLP or LCD

other than the cheap chinese made LCDs which will not be comparable in picture quality to a directview tube, the price difference is huge to get a display which actually displays a full 1920x1080 (progressively on these displays) and then the DLPs are really only 960x1080p and use wobulation to display 1920x1080
