How to offload the bass load from one amp to another? (Denon 5700 & Def Tech)

359 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  John H
I have a Denon 5700 and I use speakers with buit in bass amplifiers. My mains are Def Tech BP2000tl (500 watt amp each) and CLR 3000 center (150 watt amp).

Since i have pretty beefy amps in my mains, I was wondering if there is a way to lessen the workload on the Denon.

I have about half a dozen hook-up options multiplied by bass management options on the Denon for a bewildering number of combinations.

Let's keep it simple for now & compare the following:

option 1: connect all speakers to the Denon via simple speaker wire hook-ups only

- or -

option 2: remove the bridge between the speaker's bass & mid/hi posts and connect ONLY the bridged mid/hi w/ speaker wires to the Denon, then connect the pre-amp line-level out (full range) of the Denon to the Def Tech low level input (rca connector). This is my current hook-up.

(for purpose of this discussion set the Denon bass management to NO SUB and do not use the LFE output)

QUESTION:

=========

Will option 2. LESSEN the load on the Denon amp, or will option 1 & 2 place an EQUAL load on the Denon?

I use a pair of BP2000's and C/L/R 3000 in my system also.

Since the Def Techs have internal powered subwoofer sections either connection method will produce the same final results.

Your Denon will only be required to drive the mids and highs.

When driving the subwoofer sections with speaker level inputs only an "extremely small" amount of power is required and converted over to feed the Def Techs internal amps.

Taken from the BP2000's owners manual.

"When the speakers are hooked up using simply one set of speaker wire per speaker (with no separate low level input for the subwoofer section) a special circuit takes an infinitesimally small signal from the speaker level input and converts it to a low level signal which then drives the subwoofer power amp."

When using your option 1 or 2 your Denon will "only be required" to drive your BP2000's mids and highs.

Althogh theoretically option 2 should provide the cleanest signal to feed the powered subwoofer section. (unconverted)
