I want to pick up "Downward Spiral... [SACD Hybrid] [PA] [Remaster]" at bestbuy as it is on sale. I have read of some people having problems playing these on older dvd players. Is there a way to see if I can play it before I buy it.

Thanks

What DVD and CD players do you have? Seems like some older Toshiba DVD players mistook them for DVD's, or somethin' like that. You could get yourself a Sony 5-disc CD/SACD changer down thar too for $150.

Are you saying that they are having problems playing the standard cd layer on an SACD Hybrid? I am not aware of this and I have never had a problem playing the cd layer of a SACD Hybrid in any player including main system universal player, main system cd player, bedroom Bose wave/cd thing, car cd player or portable player. The worst experience I have is on the Bose taking a long time to cue the cd layer on occassion.

My ancient Pioneer 525 won't play some, plays others after you hit the play button a couple of times. My PCs' DVD/CD Rom drive won't play them at all, but I'm told newer CD Roms' will. I mean the CD layer, that is.

Edit: My Panasonic portable plays all hybrids beautifully! :) :)

I have 4 hybrid discs. They all play in my old Optimus CD player, car disk changer, home mega CD changer. However, my DVD/CD drive in my laptop will not play them. It keeps trying to read them as a DVDs. I suspect all older DVD drives will have this problem

The ONLY consistent problems with hybrid SACDs that I know of are when they are inserted into older DVD players/drives which, by default, look at the DVD layer but cannot recognize the SACD format that they find and freeze up. All newer DVD players/drives will, having failed to recognize the SACD format, search for (and find) the CD layer successfully. That applies even to the sub-$50 DVD players/drives.

But, if I play a standard CD and then try the hybrid, it will play the CD layer.

Really? Is it very old or is it really a DVD drive? I ask only because this is the first I've heard of a CD drive not handling it.

Yes, it was a DVD drive.

If I try to play a hybrid after watching a DVD, the player assumes it is a DVD. If I play the hybrid after listening to a CD, the player assumes it is a CD.

The player is only a little over a year old. It came with my Dell Inspiron 8600.

The computer may only be a year old but that drive may be older. I've had the same performance on my older PCs but not on the newer ones.
