How to run wires seemlessly?

803 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  help-r-monkey
I'm currently running a stereo setup in my new home. I am starting to consider how I want to run cables in the different rooms of the house. I wanted to get an idea from some of the people in here how you acheieve that seemless look without knocking a bunch of holes in your sheetrock.

On the lower level where the main setup is I want to run some rear speakers. I want to wall mount them up high, but don't want to have wires running down my wall. My thinking is find where I want to mount the speakers. Install the mount and knock a hole into the sheet rock next to the spot. Then I could run the wires down the wall and pop a small hole in the baseboard. Run the wires under the carpet and into the baseboard closer to the receiver. Is this the way you guys do it? Any advice on tools needed(I'm sure I have what's neccessary, just curious what you all use). Also do they make mountable plates like what one would use for a phone or cable jack?

Also what do you guys do when you move furniture? In the case above, I could run the mounting plate by the speak to another mounting plate lower in the wall and then run from there under the carpet. It's more sectionalized that way and might make moving the room around easier.

Also do you run your cable TV coax cable under the carpet? That seems thick enough to make an obvious indentation. Do you use special speak wire to run under there?

On the upper floor I have dual masters. The Cable comes into my room(rear master) and I need to get it over into my roommates room(front master). I'm thinking run it up threw the attic? With sloped rooves how difficult is it to access the front most and rear most walls? I'm thinking it might be very difficult to get in there and the roof will restrict the area you have to work...

Any input and/or advice would be appreciated.

Mike

Running under carpet - especially in a traveled area - is not advisable. There's usually a work-around, though. In my case, I have a basement so I knock a hole in the sheetrock, then drill up inside the wall and drop the cable into the basement to run it where it has to go. You can do likewise with an attic.

Also, there is a goodly space behind most baseboards, so if you don't go overkill on the cable thickness (use thinner jacket), you can often run the cable behind the baseboards for quite a ways.

Every house is different, so you may have to be inventive.
ATTIC AND BASEMENT AS A FIRST CHOICE

BEHIND BASE BOARDS A SECOND CHOICE

UNDER CARPET AS A LAST RESORT/ MOST LIKELY TO GET DAMAGED

AND YES THERE ARE WALL PLATES OUT THERE
