Hi there...

I have an OLD Yamaha bookshelf system, the YST-C10. Had it in college back in 1990!

The sound is still crystal clear and the unit function flawlessly.

It has a stereo output rated at 25Wx2 channels. I believe they're 6ohm speakers. It's a proprietary cable on the unit and standard stripped/stranded wire going into each speaker.

I have an extra Cadence 12" subwoofer when I upgraded my home system to a 15".

Since the speakers sound fine and the unit works fine, is there a way (an amp or pre-amp?) to split the signal so that I can use the existing speakers and add the subwoofer?

I don't know much about sound/signals and how to split. Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks!

PS - For sentimental reasons, I don't want to just replace the system. It works fine and the landfills don't need another electronic device!

I don't know

If it's a powered sub, without speaker inputs, you can use a speaker level to line level converter.

If it's a powered sub with line level inputs, you could wire up more speaker wire onto the ends of the existing speaker wire. Specifically, two wires per wire. Do this carefully, to avoid shorts.

If it's NOT a powered subwoofer, post that information.

Thanks A LOT for your replies.

It's a powered subwoofer. Here's what the product description reads:

"Line In/Sub In & Speaker Level In" "200 watts"

Max, I'm pretty handy, but don't know much about electronics/sound/electrical. Have always shied away from it and brought in experts.

Michael, specifically, how would I do this?

As you know, there are 2, 1 pair wires (positive and negative) on the unit going to the 2 speakers.

How do I piggy back these wires into the sub?

Thanks a lot in advance.

If the sub has speaker-level inputs, just add a speaker wire from each speaker to the sub's inputs. Then adjust the crossover point and level on the sub until it blends well with the speakers. Done!

Yes, the main speakers and sub will both play the bass. But it requires a bunch more equipment to fix that and it isn't worth the effort in most cases. Lots of hifi folks run their 2.1 systems this way.
