How to UNmount In-Wall Speakers?

1708 Views 14 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  BIGmouthinDC
I am trying to unmount Definitive UIW Series in-wall speakers and can't get "the dogs" to decouple from wall board when I turn screws (6 per speaker) counter clockwise. What is the proper technique?

Sounds like the dogs aren't turning, you could try sliding in a putty knife and see if you can get them to turn, otherwise If you are going to be patching the wall anyway you may need to break out the scalpel:

Just took a quick glance at the manual, you will need to loosen the screws a bit, then push down (toward the wall) on the screw and down on the speaker so that the dog is not touching the back of the drywall then turn counter clockwise.

I've turned the screws enough so that the speaker is away from the wall by about 3/8" all around, but cannot get the dogs to clear the wall board. Is there a technique to aligning the dogs? I only want to re-wire the speaker and don't want to destroy wall board. Thanks.
if the speaker is sitting out 3/8, push it flat to the wall so that the dogs disengage from the rear surface of the drywall, then give the screw another counter clockwise twist to swing it out of the way.
Thanks for all your help BIG, but I just can't get any of the damn dogs to pivot! Something seems to keep the dogs from rotating no matter how many times or which direction I turn the screws. I can bring the speaker flush again by turning screws clockwise. I'll just have to pay an installer! Less $ for toys!
Just curious, what is the reason for needing to rewire them?

I hate to admit this, but some idiot (me!) pulled on the wrong speaker wire and disabled this particular in-wall speaker!

Ugh! That sucks!

I think I would cutout the drywall like Big mentioned. Drywall repair isn't that bad (assuming you don't have some funky faux finish or wallpaper).

Good luck.

here is the best picture of that series I could find showing the dogs.

if you can get 3/8" of play, i dont see why you cant get a coat hanger or some other thin piece of metal in the gap and rake it around the ears, they are likely just embedded in the drywall from being over tightend and once the speaker is loose you should be able to hit them with the hanger and flip them in...or just unscrew until they fall off, take speaker out and pick them off the insulation (if no insulation, just a telescoping grabber and mirror/flashlight to get them OR remove baseboard, cut a small opening and get them and replace baseboard..

you dont need an installer for this!

EXCELLENT thought - as you might surmise, I'm not very handy and that's why AVS is a godsend for guys like me! Hopefully I can finish before Rose Bowl game!
Because of the flange design you will need to fasten an L shaped hook. Slide it under the flange and then twist so that the _ part of the L twists in gap between the drywall and the speaker case. Then move it to persuade the dog ears.

You will need to always start on the side of the dog so that when you pull the hook that you move the dog counter clockwise.

You never talked about what happened when you tried to push the speaker back flush with the wall after the screws had been loosened 3/8 inch. Did you even try?
