I was curious since I purchased my Onkyo AVX-280 HTIB 5 years ago I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade the speakers only? I don not want to spend a fortune or else I would just get rid of my HTIB and get a new unit but curious if I wanted to update subwoofer etc. What do you think.

Regular subs are active, unlike yours so that isn't upgradable. You might be able to connect regular speakers but my advice would be to wait until you can buy a pair of speakers, sub and AV receiver. Then you will be on the right track.
