How to Use an LCD Monitor as an HDTV?

1039 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  walford
I have a 22" lcd computer monitor I'd like to use as an HDTV, but I'm not quite sure what kind of tuner I would need.

I'm planning on getting the Terk HDTVa antenna to use in my apartment (I live in downtown Toronto, Canada), but since my monitor does not have a built in tuner, I would have to get one of those too. Ideally, I would like the tuner to be standalone (don't have to hook it up to a computer).

Could anyone kindly point me towards a device that would fit my needs.

What input options does your display have?
Pretty sure just DVI and VGA.
Well - if you can find one - a Samsung DTB-H260F works great for this (assuming you also have external speakers) - all you would need is a HDMI - DVI cable for your video. Any other external tuner that also has an HDMI port should work for this as well.

And yes - I have done this as well - so I know it will work...
The Samsung looks nice, but it's a little more expensive than I wanted to pay. Maybe I'll continue to use the 22" as my computer monitor and buy a monitor with a built in tuner.

Anyone have any thoughts on the Samsung T240HD? Also, what is the difference between buying an LCD TV and an LCD Monitor with a built in tuner?
Same thing.

Quite a few LCD TVs also have VGA ports to be used as a computer monitor.

Most of us would consider a monitor to be a TV without a tuner.
Is there a converter for Monitor to be hooked to AV..like a VCR or a game system??

Again, depends on the monitor and it's input options vs what the source output options are....

Just watch what the native resolution is on a TV if you plan to also use it as a computer monitor..
22" LCD monitors normally have a native resoluiton of 1680x1050 so they can display 720p TV content at full resolution and will play 1080i content at a reduced level of detail.

All TVs today have built in analog and digital tuners.

All TVs that also have VGA input connectors are also advertised as being PC moniotors.

Display only monitors are often advertised as HDTV and PC monitors.
