how well DVI to HDMI works?

593 Views 10 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  ebi2005
Folks,

I have a HP Media Centre which only has VGA/S Video out, and my Sony 60SX955 has HDMI inputs/Component. How do I best connec these together?

Should I buy a video card with DVI card and a DVI to HDMI cable? will this work all right, or I should consider a VGA to Component convertor.

My objective is to get the best quality, price is secondary.

Thank you.

really it all depends on what resolution you want to run.

If you looking for a good 720p rez then by all means geat an Nvidia based boared (base 6800 non-ultra/gt or a 6600GT both are great) and then pick up a DVI to HDMI cable from either:
www.cablewholesale.com
www.ramelectronics.com
www.bettercables.com
www.bluejeanscable.com

all have some great quality decent priced cables.

I am currently running a 42" Sony GWIV with a Nvidia 6800 and a DVI to HDMI cable with great results.

if you want to run 1080i resolutions then I'd recomend getting an ATI card with the DVI to component adapter.

but compareing between the two of them they are both really great in quality.

I have a 9000 hooked up to a Sony KV-36HS420 via DVI>HDMI and I am having more issues then I thought I would. I am going to switch it to a 9800pro via component dongle to see if that works better after reading that allot of people are having more issues with DVI>HDMI as compared to component. If you already have a compatible ATI I would go with that first (8500 or 9500 and greater support ATI component dongle).

If you are going to buy a video card anyways and spend a couple hundred buck I would consider a 6600.

Supposedly Nvidia's latest drivers make the DVI>HDMI connection much easier to setup.

There are a few thread floating around concerning both Nvidia and ATI I would read those and relate them to your current setup/options and go from there.

Any reason you can't run 1080i via component using a 6600GT? If not, then I just bought the wrong card :( My Pioneer Pro 610HD is an oldie, so it only has component inputs and it is a 1080i display.

Oh well, I can always put it in my wifes gaming PC :)

You will get a really bad flicker problem. Some dont mind it where as I bothers the hell out of me. Also the Component setup witht he 6600GT produces a really really bad picture FWIW.

Is it a driver problem that may be solved, or does it just not do well with 1080i? Guess I'll just have to try it, but if there is any image quality problems, I'm sure I won't like it....
Not sure some say its a driver issue/ video card hardware issue some say its just a DVI in general issue.

Also as I just edited from above you wont like the compoent setup from the 6600GT those who have used it say nothing but bad things about the PQ from the component breakout cables that come with the 6600GT.

this flicker issue at full 1080i (1920x1080i) is definitely a driver issue

I have used other more beta drivers than the 67.66 which I use now

and there was definitely less flicker

I am currently running 1440x810i @ 1080i and it does not flicker as much as full 1080i with the official nvidia beta drivers

I believe it was the 71.24 or .25 that flickered much less at 1920x1080i

I have an HP Media Center with an ATI X600 video card. I use a DVI -> HDMI cable to connect it to my 60XS955. 720p & 1080i work perfectly. Initially I had some over scan (approx 5% on 720p and almost 10% on 1080i) but after a few minor tweaks (Mid1 & Mid4 service menu's) I now have a perfect image. If it were not for my anal nature, I would not have done the SM tweaks, the picture for movies was fine.

1080i over DVI to HDMI works perfectly? Are you sure you tried 1080i? You should see a very annoying flicker on the screen at 1080i with DVI. The DVI to component adapter does not have this problem. What ATI drivers are you using?

I bought an ATI 9200 SE last night, and I'm using a DVI-Dongle-HDMI connection. I'm not happy with the text on the screen and I only get low resolution on my screen, the image is sharp though.

Should I bother tweaking the settings on this card, or I should just get a X600? Our setup seems to be identical. Thanks.
